Here comes the cheerful day of remembering Sevilla’s birthday. The Day of Mindfulness, also known as a day of celebrating Global Sevilla’s birthday, took place on the 6th of October. Of course, following our school’s theme, mindfulness, it would be no event without mindfulness. The day of mindfulness was full of us doing activities that would help us be more conscious of our surroundings and thankful for the things we have now.
The school's staff team also gave huge support to this school event. Many mindfulness-themed activities were held such as; mindful exercise, body scanning, mindful drawing, and mindful drinking. Students were grouped to take turns on these activities allowing them to get to know one another even more while enjoying the celebration of Mindfulness Day.
First the parallel session was held. There was a mindful exercise for the 8th graders and up while the 7th graders were having a relaxing mindful walk around the school; allowing them to get a proper introduction to the environment. For mindful exercise, It was hosted in the gym and the soccer field outside. We were asked to do a few simple stretches and exercises to start the day off. Even though the weather was extremely scorching hot, the small exercises and stretches which helped warm up and loosen their body to prepare for the day.
Moving on to the next activity was where the students were finally teamed up into 4 groups as some did mindful drinking or body scanning afterwards. During the mindful drinking, students were told to get a cup of tea and cookies that were prepared by the staff and teachers. All students were taking small scents of the tea doing it at the same pace. Next, they were told to sip the tea slowly to absorb the flavour and to focus on the tea while they had to eat the cookie next. They were told to notice how each cookie had a different flavor, and notice how it is prepared, focusing on nothing but the present.
Afterwards, the students who took part in the mindful drinking had to do body scanning while the second group did mindful tea drinking. Throughout the body scanning, students had to lay down on the yoga mats closing their eyes. They were allowed to be as comfortable as they could. As they closed their eyes, they had to imagine a small form of sparkle that would slowly tour their body from head to toe. This activity really allowed the students to relax and focus on the present giving them a small break and to continue on to the next upcoming session.
The following session was arranged and grouped by their grades; mindful drawing, many of the students' favorites. This activity helped to acknowledge the students' own creativity as they were told to draw, colour, or even paint anything they could imagine.
Once the students reached their homerooms after the exciting activities that cleared their minds, they were dismissed. Most of them ate the beautifully decorated mini cakes the school gave them to fill their stomachs up before being picked up.
This year’s Day of Mindfulness was truly memorable as it was the first DOM celebration that was conducted face to face in two years. Many meaningful and fun activities this year and looking forward to next year’s.
