Batik Is No Longer Just for Formal Occasions: Batik Pop Takes Center Stage at Batik Social Market 2026

THE 1O1 Jakarta Sedayu Darmawangsa and De Corner Events Introduce a Movement Bringing Batik int o the Lifestyle of a New Generation

Batik has long been associated with traditional attire and formal occasions. But what happens when batik is paired with sneakers, featured in social media content, embraced by the creative industry, and integrated into the lifestyle of today’s younger generation?

This question lies at the heart of Batik Social Market 2026, a National Batik Day celebration presented by THE 1O1 Jakarta Sedayu Darmawangsa in collaboration with De Corner Events on 2 October 2026 at Dwangsa9 Indonesian Restaurant.

Going beyond a conventional creative market, this year’s Batik Social Market introduced Batik Pop, a movement initiated by Yayasan Tjanting Batik Nusantara (BTN) that aims to bridge cultural heritage with meaningful innovation and contemporary lifestyles.

Through Batik Pop, batik is encouraged to move beyond conventional boundaries. It can be paired with sneakers, interpreted through contemporary fashion, and even developed into social entrepreneurship opportunities for younger generations.

The message is simple: batik should not only be preserved. It should be embraced and celebrated

From Cultural Heritage to Lifestyle

Batik Social Market brought together various elements in one space — culture, fashion, local brands, creativity, community, and gastronomy.

The event featured 10 local brands, namely Callia x Kuklik Batik, Put Putt Chic, Amerta, A-Line by Mille, AAJE Abaya, Jait-jait, Aluih Sumatera, Temannita, Kertas, and Dhara.

The participation of these brands demonstrated how Indonesian identity and aesthetics can be translated into a diverse range of creative works and products that resonate with contemporary lifestyles.

For THE 1O1 Jakarta Sedayu Darmawangsa, National Batik Day carries a meaning that goes beyond an annual celebration.

“For us, National Batik Day is a moment to remind ourselves that batik is an inseparable part of Indonesian identity. Without batik, Indonesia would not be Indonesia. However, preserving batik does not mean keeping it as something that we only see or wear on certain occasions. We also need to create space for batik to evolve and become part of the lifestyle of today’s generation,” said Eva Rosdiana, General Manager of THE 1O1 Jakarta Sedayu Darmawangsa.

“Through Batik Social Market, we want to create a space where heritage meets lifestyle. We hope this collaboration can bring greater appreciation to local artisans and creative talents, while also showing younger generations that wearing batik can be modern, creative, and something to be proud of,” Eva added.

Dwangsa9 Transformed into a Catwalk and Creative Hub

One of the highlights of Batik Social Market was the transformation of Dwangsa9 Indonesian Restaurant into a catwalk and creative hub.

The restaurant, which is known for its Indonesian culinary offerings, was transformed into a creative space where fashion, local brands, communities, and guests came together in one immersive experience.

One of the event’s muses was Cut Mini, an Indonesian actress and model, who walked through the Dwangsa9 area showcasing fashion pieces in an atmosphere that offered a different take on the conventional fashion show.

The concept demonstrated that spaces for celebrating culture do not always have to be conventional. A restaurant, for example, can become a stage for creativity when culture, fashion, and community come together.

Throughout the event, invited guests also enjoyed Indonesian cuisine at Dwangsa9 Indonesian Restaurant, including Konro Makassar, a traditional South Sulawesi dish known for its rich and aromatic spices. The dish was available at IDR 110,000 nett per portion.

The dining experience was complemented by Mahjong, which became one of the event’s interactive activities. Guests could enjoy their meals while playing Mahjong and connecting with one another in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

For guests who had never played Mahjong before, Ms. Dyah was also on hand to introduce the game and guide them through how to play, allowing everyone — including first-time players — to take part and enjoy the experience.

The presence of Mahjong added another layer of interaction to the event, creating opportunities for guests to connect in a more relaxed setting. The combination of fashion, culture, creativity, gastronomy, and Mahjong made Batik Social Market an even more vibrant and engaging experience for its guests.

Batik Pop Brings Batik Closer to Younger Generations

For Dini Susistianti, Founder of De Corner Events, the challenge of sustaining batik goes beyond preserving its traditional techniques. It is also about creating meaningful connections between batik and the next generation.

“Batik is a living heritage. If we want batik to remain relevant for decades and even centuries to come, it needs to speak to the generation of today. Batik can be worn with sneakers, featured on social media, become part of contemporary fashion, and even create business opportunities for young people. That is the spirit of Batik Pop that we want to bring through Batik Social Market,” said Dini Susistianti, Founder of De Corner Events.

She added that appreciation for batik should go hand in hand with supporting artisans and creative talents across Indonesia.

“We hope more young people will not only understand that batik is part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage, but will also feel proud to make it part of their identity and lifestyle. At the same time, local batik artisans across Indonesia need space and appreciation so they can continue creating and preserving this heritage,” Dini added.

Not Just Preserving, but to embraced and celebrated

The presence of Batik Pop at Batik Social Market highlights an important perspective: preserving cultural heritage does not necessarily mean keeping it in exactly the same form.

Tradition can continue to live when it is given the opportunity to engage with the times.

Through the collaboration between THE 1O1 Jakarta Sedayu Darmawangsa, De Corner Events, and Yayasan Tjanting Batik Nusantara, Batik Social Market created a space where cultural heritage meets contemporary creativity while providing a platform for local brands and creative talents.

From batik artisans in communities across Indonesia to young people in urban centers, the spirit remains the same: ensuring that batik does not remain simply a heritage of the past, but continues to become part of the present and the future.

Because batik is not only something to be preserved. It is something to be embraced and celebrated.
