Supporting SDG 12,
ARTOTEL Gelora Senayan Reduces Food Waste Through Collaboration with Scholars of Sustenance
Every day, the hospitality industry faces food surpluses from various operational activities. In Jakarta, food waste was the largest component of waste in 2023, accounting for 49.87% of total waste generation, or approximately 1.57 million tonnes annually. In response to this challenge, ARTOTEL Gelora Senayan is taking steps to manage surplus food that remains safe for consumption more responsibly by partnering with Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) Indonesia, redirecting edible food so that it does not end up as waste.
Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) is an international non-profit organization operating in Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, dedicated to rescuing surplus food that remains fit for consumption. Through this initiative, SOS aims to reduce food waste while addressing food inequality in Indonesia. As part of this collaboration, surplus food from breakfast, lunch, and dinner at ARTOTEL Gelora Senayan will be collected daily by the SOS team using refrigerated vehicles. The food will then undergo a quality control process to ensure food safety before being distributed to communities in need through the SOS Indonesia network.

Through this approach, surplus food not only helps reduce potential waste but also provides meaningful benefits to the community. This initiative forms part of ARTOTEL Gelora Senayan’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs comprise 17 global goals established by the United Nations to create a better and more sustainable world. This program aligns with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, which promotes responsible consumption and production practices, including the reduction of food waste.
Yana Nuraga, General Manager of ARTOTEL Gelora Senayan – Jakarta, said, “As part of the hospitality industry, we recognize that sustainability also begins with the everyday practices within hotel operations. Through our collaboration with Scholars of Sustenance, we aim to ensure that surplus food that remains fit for consumption does not end up as waste but can instead provide meaningful benefits to communities in need.”
“Collaboration with ARTOTEL Gelora Senayan demonstrates how the hospitality industry can create a tangible impact on the environment. Through this food rescue initiative, we are not only reducing food waste but also taking collective steps toward a hunger-free Jakarta (Zero Hunger),” said Morra Lovreza, Community and Operations Manager at the SOS Jakarta Office.
Through this program, ARTOTEL Gelora Senayan hopes to make a positive contribution to reducing food waste while ensuring that surplus food benefits communities and those in need. This initiative is expected to become part of ongoing efforts to create a hospitality industry that is more responsible toward both the environment and society.
