This meeting was neither the first nor a sudden encounter. Like a carefully written script, Wilsen Willim and Dian Sastrowardoyo have often found themselves connected through their creative journeys. The beskap-collared jacket with a high side-slit design created by Wilsen, worn by Dian Sastrowardoyo during the promotion of the series Gadis Kretek at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF 2023), as well as when Dian once again portrayed Dasiyah in Gadis Kretek (2023) and walked as the closing model at Wilsen Willim’s 2024 presentation, are examples of how both have continuously supported each other through their works.

Driven by their shared passion for cultural heritage and contemporary silhouettes inspired by Indonesia’s traditional attire, Wilsen Willim and Dian Sastrowardoyo introduce their first ready-to-wear capsule collection collaboration, launched in conjunction with National Kebaya Day on 24 July 2026 and ahead of Indonesia’s Independence Day celebrations in August. This collection will be released in two parts, with the complete collection scheduled to be unveiled during National Batik Day in October 2026.

The collection consists of 13 ready-to-wear pieces, including shirts, skirts, corsets, and outerwear, featuring silhouettes inspired by traditional Indonesian garments such as the Kebaya Kartini, Kebaya Kutubaru, Janggan tops, Beskap, Sikepan Hussar inspired by the traditional attire of Surakarta Palace soldiers, and Surjan. Each piece is reinterpreted with a modern contemporary approach through a neutral colour palette featuring white, black, maroon, navy blue, and deep green. The materials used in this collection include cotton, suiting fabric, Jacquard, and Cirebon hand-drawn batik made from cotton.

“We intentionally chose neutral colours so the pieces can easily be worn again and combined with Indonesian traditional textiles, which often feature vibrant colours and dominant patterns,” explained Wilsen Willim regarding the design concept behind the collection.

Discussing Dian Sastrowardoyo’s involvement in this collaboration, Wilsen described the process as a unique experience. “We have exchanged ideas several times before, and the response has been positive not only from social media audiences but also from my customers. In this collection, Kak Dian is not only the face of the collaboration, but she and her team also contributed ideas and curated the designs created by my team and me,” explained Wilsen regarding the involvement of Dian Sastrowardoyo and Hagai Pakan, Dian Sastrowardoyo’s stylist, in this collaborative collection.

“I want kebaya to become part of the everyday lives of Indonesian women, with a more casual style and breathable materials, while still preserving its cultural values and identity,” said Dian Sastrowardoyo during a private viewing luncheon with close friends at Plataran Dharmawangsa on 29 July 2026.

The collection, which was first launched through social media on National Kebaya Day, was introduced to the public through a limited presentation held on 29 July 2026 at Plataran Dharmawangsa restaurant. The collection will later be available for purchase during the Heritage Reimagined event at ASHTA District 8 from 6 August to 30 August 2026. The event will also showcase the Algorithm: Universal Language collection, Wilsen Willim’s Cirebon hand-drawn batik collection, Wilsen Willim ready-to-wear pieces, Bocorocco x Wilsen Willim footwear collection, and Subeng Klasik x Wilsen Willim 2.0 accessories, alongside the collaborative collection between Wilsen Willim and Dian Sastrowardoyo.

The first chapter of the Wilsen Willim and Dian Sastrowardoyo collaboration represents the love and dedication of two artists from different creative fields who share the same vision: advancing and preserving Indonesian culture through acting and filmmaking, as well as fashion and the development of Indonesia’s traditional textiles. Like the opening scene of a film telling a story of hope and great dreams, this collaboration gradually unfolds into meaningful change and delivers a lasting message that resonates deeply with audiences and, of course, its creators.
