Imagine stepping onto a familiar blue bus in central Jakarta and ending your journey on a sun-drenched, white-sand beach. By 2027, the capital’s iconic transit system aims to swap urban asphalt for open ocean, redefining the weekend escape for millions.
For decades, Jakarta’s relationship with its northern marine paradise has been marked by a poignant paradox. Just off the coast of a bustling metropolis of over 10 million residents lies Kepulauan Seribu—an enchanting archipelago of coral cays, sea turtle sanctuaries, and turquoise waters. Yet, despite its proximity, the journey across Jakarta Bay has often felt worlds away, hampered by fragmented ferry schedules, private charter costs, and varying standards of maritime safety.
That narrative is about to undergo a profound transformation. In a landmark strategic initiative, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has set a target for TransJakarta to extend its official transport network into Kepulauan Seribu by 2027. By shifting maritime transportation management from the Transportation Agency (Dishub) to the state-owned enterprise PT Transportasi Jakarta, the city administration is laying the groundwork for a seamlessly integrated, affordable, and dignified public transit ecosystem across land and sea.

A Seamless Bridge Over Blue Waters
Under the new roadmap, TransJakarta will take charge of passenger ferry routes connecting main harbor hubs—such as Muara Angke and Marina Ancol—with key island destinations including Pulau Pramuka, Pulau Tidung, Pulau Kelapa, and surrounding tourist hubs. To support this ambitious vision, the Jakarta Provincial Government has already initiated infrastructure enhancements, upgrading dock facilities and commissioning modern, safety-certified passenger vessels.
The core philosophy driving this shift is operational professionalization. Transitioning from municipal bureau management to a dedicated corporate operator allows TransJakarta to bring its hallmark standards to the waves: strict arrival timetables, digital ticketing integrated with the city's broader transit network, and standardized passenger safety protocols.

Furthermore, integrating sea routes into the public service obligation (PSO) framework promises transparent, subsidized fare structures, removing cost barriers for residents and budget-conscious travelers alike.
Redefining the Capital’s Weekend Lifestyle
For urbanites trapped in Jakarta’s concrete grid, the prospect of a TransJakarta maritime route is more than an infrastructure milestone—it is a lifestyle revolution. The traditional hassle of negotiating private boats or navigating uncertain harbour bookings will give way to a routine as simple as tapping a travel card. A spontaneous weekend escape to dive among pristine coral reefs, sample local seafood on Pulau Tidung, or explore the turtle hatcheries of Pulau Pramuka will soon become an effortless extension of city life.
Beyond tourism, the initiative addresses long-standing social equity challenges. As Governor Pramono highlighted, when island residents travel to the mainland for health care, education, or trade, “there will be guaranteed transportation arranged by a regional state-owned enterprise, TransJakarta.”
As regulatory frameworks, including regional ordinances (Perda) and gubernatorial decrees (Pergub), are tailored to empower TransJakarta’s maritime debut, Jakarta steps closer to realizing a truly holistic identity: a forward-thinking, water-conscious capital where the boundary between city hustle and island tranquility vanishes into the horizon.
