Kota Tua Jakarta never really slows down. It hums with a steady stream of visitors—curious tourists, weekend wanderers, and locals chasing a dose of nostalgia—all drawn to one of the capital’s most enduring districts. Amid the constant buzz, time seems to linger a little longer here. Towering façades, grand windows, and weathered walls stand as quiet witnesses to centuries past, offering a striking contrast to the city’s ever-evolving pace.

But this historic quarter isn’t content with simply looking back. Many of its heritage buildings have found a second life, reshaped into vibrant spaces for today’s crowd. Former residences, offices, and colonial relics now house museums, cafés, and restaurants—some long-standing, others freshly minted. The result is a layered experience where old-world charm meets contemporary energy, making every corner of Kota Tua feel like a story still being written.

Set within the storied walls of Kerta Niaga Building, a colonial-era building dating back to 1912, history takes on a delicious new form. Now revitalised as a lively hub for dining and retail, the space balances its old-world grandeur with a fresh, contemporary pulse. Among its standout tenants is Same Same Bakery.

Buzzing for all the right reasons, Same Same Bakery arrives with serious pedigree—sharing the spotlight with viral favourites like Oo Donut and Little Salt Bread in Blok M, as well as Sesame Bakery Room in Kemang. Step inside and the aesthetic instantly clicks: exposed brick walls, soaring ceilings, and a thoughtful blend of heritage character with modern detailing—perfectly in sync with the old-world charm of Kota Tua.

The layout is just as considered as the design. On the ground floor, guests are welcomed by an open kitchen and bakery display that does more than just look good—the scent of fresh butter and just-baked pastries fills the air, pulling you in before you even realise it. Upstairs, the space cleverly splits to cater to different preferences, with a dedicated indoor smoking area, while non-smoking guests can settle into a breezy, air-conditioned corner by the windows.

Keeping things refreshingly simple, Same Same Bakery runs on a “one price bakery” concept—most of its breads come in at a flat IDR 28,000, with only the occasional special menu nudging the price slightly higher. It’s an easy, no-fuss approach that lets you focus on what really matters: choosing what to eat. And when in doubt, go for the Pandoro. Freshly baked and impossible to ignore, it comes in chocolate and vanilla, but the chocolate version steals the show—firm on the outside, soft within, with a rich chocolate filling tucked inside that’s smooth and indulgent without being overly runny. Finished with a generous dusting of icing sugar, it lands on the table like a snow-capped treat.

Another standout is the Babka, available in chocolate and pistachio. Each loaf is a visual and textural treat—beautifully layered, with a crisp, caramelised surface giving way to a soft, fluffy interior.

For those leaning savoury, Same Same Bakery delivers with its Baked Karaage Sandwich. Think a pillowy soft bun topped with sesame seeds, cradling juicy chicken karaage, balanced by a crunch of shredded purple cabbage and a creamy swipe of mayonnaise. It’s simple, satisfying, and just indulgent enough to hold its own among the sweeter stars.

Another savoury pick worth your attention is the Curry Cheese Pan. This Japanese-style bread comes golden and lightly crisp on the outside, giving way to a soft interior packed with rich curry filling and melted cheese. It’s savoury, gently spiced, and deeply comforting.

Rounding things off on a sweeter note, Same Same Bakery recently introduced its Dubai Chocolate Cake (IDR 64,000)—a decadent number that leans indulgent without going overboard. Rich chocolate layers meet a surprise centre of Dubai-style chocolate kunafa, adding a subtle crunch that plays beautifully against the cake’s soft texture. It’s complex, textural, and pleasantly not too sweet.

Same Same Bakery is the kind of place where you can sip coffee beneath soaring ceilings and timeworn details, all while indulging in artisanal treats—proof that in Kota Tua Jakarta, heritage isn’t just preserved, it’s reimagined. It also doubles as a welcome pause in the middle of your exploration—a cool, comfortable spot to take a breather, escape the blazing sun, and recharge before heading back out into the bustle.
