Unveiled The Urban Resilience Strategies to Support Indonesia Emas 2045

British Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia

As Indonesia sets its sights on the ambitious Indonesia Emas 2045 vision, urban resilience has emerged as a key priority in the nation’s development roadmap. With just over two decades to achieve this vision, the period ahead represents a crucial life cycle for infrastructure, sustainability, and urban innovation across the country.

To address the unique challenges and opportunities facing Indonesia’s cities, BritCham Indonesia’s Smart Sustainable Cities HUB, in collaboration with the Institute of Strategic Risk Management (ISRM), hosted an insightful event on Wednesday, 25 September 2024, at World Trade Centre 3 in Jakarta.

The event brought together industry leaders and experts for a dynamic panel discussion focused on urban resilience strategies. Key topics included the integration of emerging technologies and valuable lessons from past urban development initiatives. Attendees gained deep insights into the strategies needed to ensure Indonesia's cities remain adaptable, sustainable, and innovative in the face of future challenges.

In his presentation, Dr. David Rubens, Executive Director of the Institute of Strategic Risk Management (ISRM), emphasised the growing complexity of urban environments and the importance of comprehensive risk management approaches. He remarked, “Pollution, poverty, and climate change are not merely rational problems. To address them, we must view the world through the lens of three key pillars: complexity, unprecedented challenges, and non-recoverable impacts.”

Dr. Graeme Riddell, Climate & Sustainability Consulting Leader for Asia & Pacific at Marsh McLennan, contributed to the discussion by sharing insights on the role of climate action in shaping resilient cities. He stated, “Adaptation to climate change helps businesses avoid economic losses and achieve increased revenue and cost savings through risk protection, enhanced opportunities, and broader collaboration.”

Ian Betts, Vice Chair of BritCham Indonesia and Managing Partner of CastleAsia, who moderated the session, concluded the discussion by summarising the key takeaways. He noted the importance of collaboration, innovation, and forward-thinking policies in achieving urban resilience and sustainable growth.

This initiative aligns with the unwavering commitment of BritCham Indonesia’s Smart Sustainable Cities HUB to driving sustainable development in Indonesia. From visionary projects such as the development of Indonesia's new capital city (Ibu Kota Nusantara) to addressing critical issues like sustainable financing, improvements urban resilience in response to climate change, digital solutions for cities, air quality improvement, and innovative waste management.
