Jakarta Aquarium & Safari (JAQS) Celebrates Shark Awareness Day
Shark Awareness Day, which was attended by government agencies and colleagues from non-profit organizations working in the marine, fisheries and environmental sectors, is a supportive activity and one of the commitments of the Jakarta Aquarium & Safari as a conservation institution to always participate in educating and improving public concern for marine and land animals.
According to the World Wildlife Fund globally, shark populations are currently reported to be declining due to various threats to sharks and their ecosystem. Indonesia is home to 218 shark species or around 20% of the number of shark species in the world. Sharks themselves are one of the top predators that help maintain the balance of the food chain in the marine ecosystem. Therefore, Indonesian conservation institutions such as the Jakarta Aquarium & Safari must play a major role in shark conservation efforts.
"Animal conservation requires contributions from many parties such as government and private conservation institutions such as the Jakarta Aquarium & Safari, but the role of ordinary people is no less important. "That is the reason we are holding this event by inviting various parties and visitors to celebrate Shark Awareness Day together in an interesting and informative way," according to Abdul Wahid Hasdar as Deputy Manager of the Life & Science Department of the Jakarta Aquarium & Safari.
Jakarta Aquarium & Safari actively holds various conservation activities such as releasing turtles and planting mangroves in the Seribu Islands. Apart from that, JAQS also actively participates in taking part in programs from other institutions or organizations to learn from and support each other in achieving the same goal, namely preserving nature and the animals that live in it.
