Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta Achieves Third Silver EarthCheck Certification in 2026

Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta has achieved its third Silver EarthCheck Certification in 2026, marking another milestone in its ongoing commitment to sustainable hospitality. The achievement reflects the hotel’s continued progress in environmental management, resource efficiency, local economic development, community empowerment and cultural heritage preservation.

Advancing Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

As part of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions, the hotel has transitioned from natural gas to electric technologies, achieving a 3.5% reduction in carbon emissions, equivalent to 213,817.2 kg. The hotel has also progressively replaced conventional lighting with energy-efficient LED technology. In addition, solar panels installed for the Kempinski Grand Ballroom generate up to 159,377 kWh of renewable electricity, supplying approximately 1.2% of the hotel’s total electricity requirements.

The hotel continues to strengthen its environmental performance through initiatives that reduce resource consumption and promote responsible operations. All cleaning products used across the hotel are certified as environmentally friendly and biodegradable, while LED technology accounts for 50% of the hotel’s lighting, supporting greater energy efficiency.

Strengthening Responsible Resource Management

Waste management is another key focus, with the hotel supporting food redistribution initiatives that help provide meals to communities in need. Recyclable materials are also collected and sold for repurposing into new products, extending their useful life and supporting a more circular approach to resource management.

Conserving Water Through Efficient Technologies

Water conservation measures have delivered practical improvements across the property. Approximately 85% of the hotel’s toilets are equipped with water-efficient low- or dual-flush systems, using just 3.3–3.5 litres per flush. All urinals in public toilet facilities use automatic or waterless technology to minimise water consumption. The hotel has also introduced sensor-operated taps and selected low-irrigation landscape plants to further improve water efficiency.

Supporting Local Employment and Economic Growth

Beyond environmental initiatives, Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta continues to contribute to the local economy through responsible sourcing, employment and professional development. Approximately 50% of the hotel’s suppliers are local, while 60 management positions are held by local professionals. Local employees account for 38% of the hotel’s total workforce, reflecting its ongoing contribution to employment opportunities and talent development within the community.

Expanding Hospitality Education and Skills Development

The hotel continues to expand its commitment to vocational education through the SMK BISA industry-class programme, increasing its participation from two schools to four. Through this initiative, students gain greater exposure to the hospitality industry and opportunities to develop practical skills that support their future careers.

Empowering Communities Through Inclusive Opportunities

Community empowerment remains central to the hotel’s social responsibility efforts, particularly in creating opportunities for children with disabilities to develop their talents and explore future employment pathways. The hotel has supported activities marking International Skills Day at SLBN 11 and International Children’s Day at Sekolah Kami, reinforcing its commitment to inclusion, education and equal opportunities.

Giving Hotel Textiles a New Purpose Through Paisley Things

In collaboration with The Darius Tobing Foundation, the hotel supports Paisley Things, a linen upcycling initiative that gives used hotel textiles a new purpose. The programme has contributed 4,088 uniform pieces and 632 linen and towel items. Through the initiative, donated textiles are transformed into handcrafted products by local women artisans in Marunda, North Jakarta, creating livelihood opportunities through fair-trade practices while supporting animal rescue shelters across Indonesia.

Promoting Employee Health and Well-being

Employee well-being is another important aspect of the hotel’s sustainability agenda. Initiatives include health talks featuring specialist doctors, weekly healthy food offerings in the staff canteen and a staff wellness challenge focused on healthy weight management. Together, these programmes encourage healthier lifestyles and promote a workplace culture that prioritises the well-being of its people.

Preserving Jakarta’s Heritage and Cultural Legacy

As a heritage property with a longstanding place in Jakarta’s history, Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta also incorporates cultural preservation into its sustainability efforts. Through the Guest Hotel Heritage Tour and Family Hotel Heritage Tour, the hotel shares its history and Indonesia’s cultural heritage with guests and the wider community, helping preserve the stories and traditions associated with one of the country’s most iconic landmarks.

Working Towards EarthCheck Gold Certification

Achieving its third Silver EarthCheck Certification in 2026 reinforces Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta’s commitment to advancing responsible hospitality through measurable environmental improvements, inclusive community initiatives and the preservation of cultural heritage. Looking ahead, the hotel aims to achieve EarthCheck Gold Certification in its fifth year of the certification journey, setting a clear direction for continued progress and stronger sustainability performance.

Established in 1962, the hotel remains committed to safeguarding its historic legacy while contributing to a more sustainable future for Jakarta and generations to come.
