NJIS: Preparing Students for the Future Today!

We spoke with Head of School Ezra Sun Alexander, a seasoned educator with extensive experience in diverse educational settings, to discover what sets NJIS apart.

Q: Why did NJIS choose to implement the IB program?

A: "The world is changing rapidly. At NJIS, we recognize that students need more than just traditional academics to succeed. The IB program fosters essential skills like complex problem-solving, a strong work ethic, and social-emotional intelligence – skills that will be crucial in the ever-changing job landscape."

Q: How does NJIS support students' social and emotional growth?

A: "We believe in a holistic approach to education. Through programs like our 'Be Good People,’ which focuses on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills and our 'Let Grow,' initiative that is creating avenues for students to be more independent and engaged, students learn to manage conflicts, calculate risks, and care for others.

We also provide a safe and supportive environment where students can connect their learning to real-life experiences and develop the emotional intelligence needed to navigate a complex world. Our small class sizes allow for personalized attention and strong teacher-student relationships. In addition, every student in the building has an advisor or homeroom teacher who they can turn to for support."

Q: What makes NJIS's approach to education unique?

A: "We combine the IB framework with Common Core, Aero, and NGSS standards to provide a truly well-rounded education that focuses on mastery, autonomy and purpose. Our assessment methods are diverse, incorporating daily formative assessments and end-of-unit summative assessments for a balanced and comprehensive understanding of each student's progress. We also offer a wide range of after-school activities, from sports and music to student council and Model UN, catering to diverse interests and talents."

Q: What advice would you give to parents considering the IB program?

A: "The IB program is challenging but incredibly rewarding. It encourages critical thinking, independent thought, and global citizenship. Students delve into six subject groups, engage in experiential learning through exhibitions and CAS projects, and develop advanced research skills. While it requires dedication and time management, the IB program provides students with a significant advantage in acceptance to top-tier universities compared to other educational programs and prepares them for personal and academic success.

NJIS is a multicultural community with students from over 20 countries, fostering a global perspective and celebrating diversity. With dedicated support systems, including English Language Learner (ELL) classes and specialized programs like a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), NJIS ensures that every student receives the individualized attention they need to flourish.”
