Recognized as the world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery, the old Bushmills Distillery has a long and storied history. On 1608, King James I grants royal license to distil whiskey to the district that now includes the village of Bushmills. Numerous prizes in international spirits competition, including the ‘only gold medal for whiskey’ at the Paris 1889 expo.
The distillery eventually toasted to its 400 years celebration of local distilling heritage on 2008. This remarkable feast was recognized by the Bank of Ireland who print Bushmills on their bank notes, and have done ever since. Seven years later, Bushmills was acquired by Proximo and last until today.
At Bushmills, only 100% Irish malted barley is being used. It is then complemented by the water from River Bush which runs through the distillery grounds. Throughout all the necessary process of whiskey making, Irish Whiskey is typically distilled three times. It is the third distillation that gives its distinguishable smoothness. But, before it can be called as an Irish Whiskey, it needs to mature in wooden cask for at least three years and one day (for good luck).
