Beyond the traffic and skyscrapers, Jakarta hides a more intimate side filled with tucked-away cafés and dining spots, whether hidden inside quiet alleys or nestled within bustling districts that many people often overlook. Jakarta proves there is always something unexpected waiting to be uncovered. So, if you want to explore the capital beyond its usual hotspots, here are some of the top hidden gems in Jakarta worth discovering.

Jakarta’s Top Hidden Gem Spots

Central Jakarta

Bakmie Aboen

Bakmi Aboen

Tucked away in the labyrinth of Pasar Baru, every narrow alley seems to whisper stories of the past—and serve up legendary bites along the way. One such institution is Bakmi Aboen, a noodle house that has stood the test of time since opening its doors in 1962. As expected, the star of the show is its non-halal bakmi. Think springy, homemade noodles topped with a generous mix of char siu pork, crispy roasted pork, minced chicken, mushrooms, and beef meatballs, with fried wontons on the side. If you’re ordering for the first time, go straight for the Bakmi Babi Special. The noodles have a signature texture—slightly slick, pleasantly soft, yet resilient—thanks to being made fresh every day. Rich, savoury, and indulgent, this bowl defines comfort eating the old-school Chinese way.

Jungen Joint

Jungen Joint, a popular burger joint in Pasar Baru. It is best known as a home burger started by a mother and her son. This cozy yet humble spot accommodates 6 to 8 people on its front veranda, which doubles as a small dining area. To ensure you don't miss out, it's best to arrive early at Jungen Joint as they open at 11 AM on Wednesday to Sunday. With only about 30 burgers available daily, arriving on time is crucial. You can queue immediately and secure one of their sought-after homemade burgers before they run out. For first-timers, trying the Jungen Signature burger is an ideal option. It's crafted with a brioche bun sprinkled with sesame seeds, signature sauce, signature beef patty, cheese, pickles, and caramelized onions. The brioche bun is incredibly soft, the beef patty is juicy, and the pickles and caramelized onions add a delightful sweet and sour note. The key to its unique flavour lies in the beef patty and the sauce, which features a hint of Middle Eastern spices, particularly cumin.

Warung Roekoen

Warung Roekoen

In the heart of Senen, Central Jakarta — a district synonymous with clattering storefronts, relentless traffic and the pulse of daily trade — calm feels like a rare commodity. Yet tucked away on Jalan Kramat Pulo Dalam stands a quiet antidote to the chaos: Warung Roeken, a bona fide hidden gem that has long been the saving grace of boarding house dwellers in the area. The interior leans unapologetically old-school — a nostalgic embrace of “jadul” charm that transports you straight into a vintage living room frozen in time. Warung Roeken keeps the menu refreshingly unfussy. Think comforting, everyday Indonesian fare at prices that won’t make your wallet flinch — the kind of food that feels made for long chats and second rounds.

Seoul Bakeshop

Seoul Bakeshop

Tucked away in the unassuming streets of Penjaringan, North Jakarta—just a short drive from Pluit—lies a sweet surprise you wouldn’t expect to find in this part of town. Seoul Bakeshop is a hidden gem that feels worlds away from its industrial surroundings. The display at Seoul Bakeshop keeps things refreshingly simple—you get exactly what you see. But it’s the lineup of signature Kouign Amann with Osmanthus cream that truly steals the spotlight. Each golden, sugar-coated pastry is topped with seasonal fruits—think glistening Muscat grapes, plump strawberries, and juicy peaches—that add a fresh, fruity twist to the rich, earthy cream beneath. The balance is spot-on: crisp, fragrant, and indulgent without being overly sweet, making it the kind of dessert that quietly impresses rather than overwhelms.

South Jakarta

Babi Tong

In a quiet alley in the residential neighborhood area of Fatmawati and Cipete, Babi Tong set its establishment in one of the houses around the area. No big signage in sight, all you have to do is just follow the maps on your phone and set foot in front of the house garage to see the flyer on the wall directing you to the rooftop. Babi Tong presents the flavours of local on every plate and then combines with slightly different smoking techniques to present a new taste. The smoking process usually takes hours around eight hours to produce the smoky roasted pork and pork crackling that is not only perfectly crispy but also the flavourful fat still seeps inside. It still goes through a drying process under the sun.

Bebek Perdikan

If you’ve ever noticed signage of Bebek Perdikan on Guru Mughni Street, it means you're nearby to the eatery. Walking past the dead-end of Gang Susu Street might be a little tricky for a few minutes but at the end of the street, that's where Bebek Perdikan lies beyond the wall. Hidden behind the otherwise very ordinary-looking wall is a verdant space full of lush trees and plants. There are bamboo plants that tower high. Apart from soothing the eyes amidst the concrete jungle, the breeze there is also very noticeable. The dining area exudes the concept of a traditional Javanese house dominated by wood, oil lanterns, and birdcages. Actually, this restaurant only has an indoor area. Meanwhile, the base of the restaurant is deliberately filled with pebbles, giving it a rustic impression. One of the duck dishes that is a mainstay here is Bebek Goreng Perdikan. One portion is served with rice, chili paste, and fresh vegetables like cabbage, tomatoes, and cucumber. The fried duck is fried crispy and sprinkled with fried chopped garlic. When served warm, the savoury aroma hits the nose.
