The synergy between Serip, a luxury lighting brand from Portugal known for drawing inspiration from nature, and Indonesian designer Sammy Hendramianto Syamsulhadi has resulted in the creation of Anthurium—a breathtaking lighting masterpiece. Officially unveiled at The Colors of Indonesia (TCOI) exhibition at Senayan City, Jakarta on Thursday, September 12, 2024, this collaboration beautifully combines high craftsmanship and creativity.
SERIP Launches First Collaborative Product with Indonesian Designers
Serip’s latest collection draws from the Anthurium plant, known locally in Indonesia as Kuping Gajah. The chandelier, crafted from cast bronze and clear crystal glass, showcases the elegance of the Anthurium in the "Sunset at Batujimbar Bathroom" at TCOI. With a striking length of 3 meters and weighing approximately 100 kilograms, this piece is designed to withstand Indonesia's tropical and humid climate, as bronze, a noble material, resists rust.
The creation of the Anthurium chandelier begins with molding using sand-casting technology, which replicates real Anthurium leaves, followed by the crafting of detailed molds for the premium glass and bronze elements. In line with Serip's design philosophy, which emphasizes natural elements, the chandelier's structure also incorporates sand-cast tree trunks, transforming organic shapes into stunning artistic lighting pieces.
The combination of bronze and glass ensures that the chandelier harmonizes with its surroundings while adding an air of elegance to the space. Each Serip lamp is crafted by hand, imparting a unique character to every piece, making the Anthurium chandelier an exclusive work of art cherished by collectors and art enthusiasts alike.
Sammy Hendramiatno Syamsulhadi, the interior designer behind the collaboration, shared that when Serip proposed the partnership in early 2024, he envisioned the product being displayed in the bathroom area at TCOI 2024. With the event's theme being "Summer Home," Sammy aimed to incorporate elegant, tropical, and outdoor elements to enhance the concept of a vacation home.
“This Anthurium collection is ideal for dining rooms, libraries, living rooms, pantries, bathrooms, or semi-private spaces. Serip products are also customizable to suit clients' preferences,” said Sammy.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Sammy noted the memorable challenge of completing the project in just eight months. Having first encountered Serip at the Maison Object Asia exhibition in Singapore in 2015, Sammy managed to finalize the concept, ideas, and design inspiration within a month.
“I chose the Kuping Gajah leaf as inspiration because Serip is known for its designs featuring twigs, leaves, and organic forms. This plant is commonly found in Indonesia and has an elegant, timeless character,” Sammy explained.
A long-time admirer of Serip’s work, Sammy previously included the Aqua collection chandelier in his showcase at TCOI 2016, themed "The Songket Boutique." Expressing his gratitude, Sammy added, “I’m honored Serip trusted me with this Anthurium collection.”
Following the completion of the chandelier, the first in the Anthurium series, Sammy is now working on additional pieces, including wall lamps, standing lamps, and table lamps, which are expected to be finished early next year.
Sammy, a former Senior Associate at the renowned design consultancy Grahacipta Hadiprana, founded his own design firm, SHS Associates, in 2013. His designs are characterized by a fusion of classic and contemporary styles, often featuring elements of Indonesian culture.
Serip Indonesia CEO Martin Lim explained that Serip selected Sammy as a partner due to his design philosophy, which aligns with Serip’s aesthetic. “We’ve known Mr. Sammy and his design approach since 2015. He frequently integrates Serip products into his work, and we felt a strong connection between our visions, leading us to pursue this collaboration,” Martin said.
Martin emphasized that Serip’s decorative lighting products go beyond mere lighting fixtures; they represent exclusive works of art due to the intricate, handmade production process. “Owning a Serip product is not just about buying a decorative lamp—it's about investing in a piece of art,” Martin concluded.
Founded in 1961, Serip is a Portuguese company renowned for conceptualizing, designing, and producing nature-inspired lighting that transforms organic elements into artistic creations. By drawing inspiration from the beauty of the natural world, Serip crafts illuminations that go beyond function to become works of art.
With three generations of Portuguese artists at the helm, Serip blends the creative visions of craftsmen and designers to deliver exceptional products. Each piece is meticulously designed to stand out, offering a fresh perspective that contrasts with the mass-produced items commonly found in modern markets.
Serip Indonesia began its journey in 2012, expanding the brand’s global reach. In 2016, it opened its first showroom at the Jakarta Design Center, showcasing Serip’s signature creations to Indonesian clientele.
