The ‘Creating Shared Understanding’ module focuses on how to use questioning to check one's own understanding and the understanding of others and to clarify information. The concepts aim to overcome common communication barriers related to:

• lack of self confidence
• not preparing what you're going to say
• differences in language proficiency
• use of slang and jargon
• outside factors such as noise

This is important to do, as creating shared understanding can:

• help avoid misunderstanding and assumptions
• invite new information and further insight
• create greater rapport and trust with team members, clients, and contacts

At the end of the module, participants would be able to identify the best way to build mutual understanding depending on the context, and will have practiced doing that in a few different situations.
