Empowering Women Entrepreneurs: Jakarta's Dessert Queens

It's a woman's world! Cooking remains one of the most male-dominated professions, and so does baking. But, not in this case, this time we highlight the women who break barriers and are not afraid to open unique businesses. And, we focus on the cake shop and bakery run by the most talented women in Jakarta. The list keeps going and going and here are our picks of the five queens of dessert in Jakarta that you should know.

Starting from Ermey Trisniarty's love for chocolate when was little, Ermey determined to take an educational path that matched her passion. Ermey majored in Bakery and Pastry Production followed by Pattiserie Management at STP (Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata) Bandung or better known as NHI (National Hotel Institute). Until finally in 2001, Ermey ventured to open Toko Cokelat with the help of the late Gusnidar and Okky Dewanto who later became Ermey's husband and Main Director of Dapur Cokelat. With limited equipment, Toko Chocolate then morphed into Dapur Cokelat which has a large, modern production kitchen and currently has 29 outlets and 26 delivery points throughout Indonesia.

Fransisca Tjong, Veronica Tjong, Sisca Tan

Pancious was founded on March 1, 2007, by Fransisca Tjong with her sister, Veronica Tjong, and their cousin Sisca Tan. Pancious' business started from a house in the Permata Hijau area. Passion has made them consistently carry out this business until it has developed into a fairly large business group in the F&B sector.

According to her, to start a business you don't need to worry about capital. The important thing is to be creative in developing a business and giving something new to the market. Finally, Pancious, which was previously known as 'Pancious Pancake House', continued to develop into 'Pancious', which now specializes in Western dishes with various food menu categories. Over time, Fransisca also launched the House of Brooklyn.

Talita Setyadi (BEAU BAKERY)

Talita Setyadi is one of the founders of a European-style healthy bakery based in Jakarta. Named BEAU BAKERY, Talita initially went to music school and dreamed of becoming a singer, not a chef. In fact, now she is a chef and is included in the top 30 list of the Under 30 category "The Arts" version of Forbes magazine. Her career journey took place in 2015 when Talita and her friend, Ian Chin founded Beau Bakery which became the first bakery to popularize authentic European-style healthy bread and pastries in Jakarta.

Lalita Setiandi built her artisanal bakery business in the midst of a pandemic. Starting from an online shop, now LIT Bakehouse has become a hidden gem culinary destination that is much sought after in the Glodok area. You could say one of the reasons is there is an emotional factor because Glodok is Lalita's birthplace, but apart from that there is another purpose, Lalita's main dream of returning Glodok's glory. As the result, LIT Bakehouse is truly a humble and down-to-earth bakehouse that rewards inquisitive diners with remarkable taste adored by the neighborhood.

Yoan Tjahjadi (Namelaka)

Yoan Tjahjadi is an alumnus of LaSalle College Indonesia's Visual Communication Design major. She became one of the Indonesians who had worked with the famous Australian pastry chef, Adriano Zumbo, in Melbourne.

Together with his partner, Ivan Setyawan, Yoan can concentrate more seriously on product marketing, while Ivan oversees the kitchen operations of this business which was originally moving online. Going to design school was not able to stop Yoan Tjahjadi, the owner of Namelaka - Refined Patisserie, from being interested in the world of pastry. Namelaka's mainstay is choux pastry (abbreviated as choux) with crackers of sablé topping in various scrumptious variants.
