Foreign nationals with Permanent Stay Permits (ITAP) and Limited Stay Permits (ITAS) can breeze through immigration at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta and I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali using the sleek, automated gates.
This upgrade is part of the country’s ongoing digital transformation aimed at improving both convenience and efficiency—while keeping security tight.
Previously, only foreign visitors with e-Visas or Visa-Free Visits (BVK) had access to these autogates, while ITAP/ITAS holders had to go through manual checks at special counters. Now, thanks to the magic of facial recognition technology, immigration clearance happens in a flash—just 15 to 25 seconds per person.
The Directorate General of Immigration stated that the integration of the visa and stay permit systems with the autogate system boosts immigration performance at entry points. “This makes the process faster, more enjoyable, and much more effective than before, where ITAP/ITAS holders had to wait at counters despite having dedicated lanes.”
In fact, between January and September 2024, about 3.5 million foreign nationals passed through these autogates. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport now has 78 operational autogates, while I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport boasts 90.

Although the process is more streamlined, security is still at the top of immigration’s mind. The facial recognition tech ensures that each passenger is carefully screened against blacklists and red notices.
More initiatives to make Indonesia a welcoming place for high-quality foreign nationals by immigration are currently in the works.
