Bridging Excellent Education and Career Opportunities for Indonesians at Study UK & Careers Fest 2024 by BritCham Education Centre

Study UK & Careers Fest by BritCham Education Centre brought more than 300 Indonesians together from all education and professional levels. The Fest was held on Saturday, 24 February 2024 at Alila SCBD Jakarta and supported by the British Embassy Jakarta. 

It provided an excellent combination of education and careers exhibition to showcase the UK as a whole! The Fest itself served as an excellent platform for Indonesian students and young adults to have a better picture of their plans, either with further education in the UK and/or their career paths. This Fest is not only limited to students and young adults, but parents and school counsellors have also benefited in finding the best choice for their children’s future educational needs and career prospects through participating UK universities and corporates, and the Talkshow Corners. 

The Talkshow Corner began with an introduction from UK universities and companies exhibitors. And it would only be complete with hearing first-hand what studying at UK universities is like from Indonesian alumni’s perspective. The Alumni Corner welcomed two distinguished UK university alumni; Maulana M. Syuhada, PhD, an alumnus of Lancaster University who graduated with PhD, in Management Science, he is also a Director & Producer of the Film “The Journey: Angklung Goes To Europe and Venska Adelia Tanubrata, an alumnus of Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) with MBA, Luxury Brand Management, she is a Former Country Manager of Marhen. J Indonesia, with professional backgrounds who have been educated at UK universities and whose careers were supported by their lifetime in the UK.

In addition, Chevening, represented by Vonny Lisayani, Chevening Scholarship and Alumni Coordinator for Indonesia and Timor-Leste, was also in attendance to enhance the event and assist Indonesian students interested in pursuing further studies in the UK. During this session, Vonny provided a detailed explanation of the scholarship application process and the necessary preparations before applying for a scholarship or preparing to study in the UK. 

UK universities offer a variety of unique yet industry-demand-driven degrees that will accelerate your career prospects upon returning to Indonesia. Not only does it offer promising job prospects, but it also has a positive impact on Indonesia. As articulated by Vonny, Chevening Scholarship and Alumni Coordinator for Indonesia and Timor-Leste, "What we look at is not how cool your job or your title is, but how your work can have a positive impact on your surroundings". 

This Fest also offered information for Indonesian career finders. This is substantiated by the inclusion of a Career Corner featuring presentations by representatives from MOONFOLK; Ria Damyari, Human Resource Director and Michael Page Indonesia; Erni Susanto, Senior Consultant and Dezwin Soelaeman, Consultant. This session delves into strategies for enhancing a CV to increase its attractiveness to HR, along with tips and tricks for job interviews as well as other insights related to the professional sphere. 

BritCham Indonesia through its business unit; BritCham Education Centre has become the facilitator for UK Higher Education institutions, local institutions, and Indonesian students to, not only, support the UK's ambition to export more in the education sector and to address challenges that private sectors have in talent acquisition, development, and retention, but also to provide students and their families with better information needed for their further studies in the UK. 

The participating UK universities that attended are University of Bradford, University of Bedfordshire, University of Hull, Lancaster University, Staffordshire University, Teesside University, University of Derby, University of Exeter, Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), Loughborough University, University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol, and University of Wolverhampton. The participating corporates that attended are ACCA, PZ Cussons Indonesia, PT Shell Indonesia, Ginting & Reksodiputro in association with Allen & Overy, Moonfolks, and BritCham HUBS. 

This Fest shows the enthusiasm of the Indonesian people, particularly the youth's, eagerness to advance their careers globally, particularly in the UK. This enthusiasm is our motivation to further cultivate and support young Indonesians in realising their aspirations abroad.
