KinoFest 2023 Shows the Latest German Films in the Southeast Asia and Pacific Region

-

The Goethe-Institut is holding the second edition of the annual German film festival KinoFest from September to November 2023 in various cities in the Southeast Asia and Pacific region, this time offline after previously taking place online in its inaugural edition last year. KinoFest 2023 is present in a number of cities in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, New Zealand, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam.

KinoFest 2023 is a joint production of eight Goethe-Instituts in Southeast Asia which showcases the latest works released from 2021 to 2023. "This year, KinoFest presents a diverse selection of films, ranging from drama, documentary, comedy, fiction, to thriller. "The German films presented raise a number of important issues such as interconnection, immigration and attachment," said Dr. Ingo Schöningh, Regional Head of Cultural Programs at Goethe-Institut Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

In Indonesia, KinoFest can be enjoyed for free on 21-27 September at GoetheHaus Jakarta and 22-27 September at Institut Francais Indonesia (IFI) Bandung. A total of 15 films will be screened in Jakarta. Meanwhile in Bandung, 12 films will be shown.

Gugi Gumilang, curator of KinoFest 2023, added, "KinoFest's curation stems from the desire to show that German film is a rich and diverse intertwining of influences and voices, reflecting Germany's complex history and its ever-evolving cultural landscape."

In Jakarta, KinoFest will open with the 2022 film released entitled Roter Himmel by director Christian Petzold. This film, which won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), tells the story of four young people who meet in a holiday cottage on the shores of the Baltic Sea. When a forest fire hits, their emotions flare up: happiness, lust and love collide with jealousy, anger and tension.
