Yayasan Batik Indonesia Celebrates National Batik Day with Various Interesting Activities at the Indonesian Batik Museum

Batik has become one of Indonesia's rich cultural heritages which has high value and is full of philosophical meaning, which is spread throughout Indonesia. Batik has been passed down from generation to generation and has been part of Indonesian culture since ancient times.

This is confirmed by UNESCO's recognition of Indonesian Batik as a masterpiece of intangible cultural heritage for the (Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity) on October 2 2009.

UNESCO's recognition of Indonesia as a world intangible cultural heritage in 2009 is a form of strategic recognition of the existence of batik and its importance for civilization and cultural development. With this recognition, it is hoped that the community can maintain batik as a living tradition.

The President of the Republic of Indonesia, through Presidential Decree Number 33 of 2009 dated 17 November 2009, has also decided that every October 2 is celebrated as National Batik Day. The issuance of Presidential Decree Number 33 of 2009 is an effort by the government to improve the positive image and dignity of the Indonesian nation in international forums.

In order to implement the President's decision, the Yayasan Batik Indonesia (Indonesian Batik Foundation) is again holding a series of events to commemorate National Batik Day 2023. On this occasion, the theme will be "Batik Bangkit" (Batik Rises). Through this theme, the celebration of National Batik Day 2023 can revive the batik industry from the pandemic period which had fallen, so that the batik industry can bounce back from all aspects of production, trade, development and innovation.

"This year Yayasan Batik Indonesia commemorates National Batik Day by providing education to the public about the diversity of batik in Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke. "Apart from that, this year's National Batik Day also has a mission to revive the batik industry after the pandemic," said Shanty Leksono, Chief Executive of the National Batik Day Celebration.

The 2023 National Batik Day celebration will present a special event where every participant can experience the rich variety of batik from all over Indonesia. Through this series of activities, the Indonesian Batik Foundation is committed to educating the public, especially the younger generation or what is usually called Gen Z, about the fascinating diversity of batik culture, which stretches from the tip of Sumatra Island to the land of Papua.

"Carrying the mission to provide education for the younger generation, of course at this year's National Batik Day celebration we will provide various efforts to make batik part of the identity of Gen Z, also by holding various competitions, such as batik writing work which is of course aimed at Gen Z," said Diana Sentosa.

Various Activities

On this special occasion, the Yayasan Batik Indonesia is collaborating with the Directorate General of Culture, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, especially through the Indonesian Batik Museum and the Ministry of Industry to jointly hold the 2023 National Batik Day event.

Apart from that, the Indonesian Batik Foundation has also donated more than 730 Indonesian batik collections from the Indonesian Batik Foundation to the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah Indonesian Batik Museum.

At the 2023 National Batik Day Celebration, the Indonesian Batik Foundation as the organizer will also present several series of activities, including:

1. Breaking the Batik Record with all Batik Centers in Indonesia

Also present will be batik craftsmen who have been curated and have high skills to create works of art to produce works of art for IKN. This can of course be realized thanks to collaboration between the provincial Dekranasda, the Ministry of Industry, and the Indonesian Batik Makers Association. This activity will also be a MURI record breaking.

2. Announcement of the Batik Writing Competition

With a mission to educate, the celebration of National Batik Day also presents a scientific writing competition about batik which is divided into several categories including pupils, students and the general public, the results of which will be announced at the peak of the celebration.

3. Batik education for students

The activity will also be enlivened by introducing batik education for students to explore the Indonesian Batik Museum together and make batik with batik makers from all over Indonesia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology.

4. Batik Fashion Show

The incomplete appearance of batik is wrapped in a fashion show which will display various batik cloth motifs that represent the rich culture of various regions in Indonesia.

It is hoped that the presence of this event will become a place to highlight and promote the richness of Indonesian Batik culture which is spread from the tip of the island of Sumatra to Papua.

Apart from that, this event will also be a special moment for batik craftsmen from various regions in Indonesia to be able to contribute with a batik work that represents the identity of each region as a real embodiment of Batik preservation in Indonesia.

"Hopefully with this National Batik Day celebration we can reaffirm our commitment to Indonesian batik, our commitment to forming a young generation of Indonesians who are ready to preserve batik and maintain and create noble works for the nation, for the country, which continue to etch our identity and provide Indonesia's contribution to world culture," said Diana Santosa, deputy chairman of the Yayasan Batik Indonesia.

It is hoped that the 2023 National Batik Day celebration will not only be an event that aims to foster love and pride in Indonesian culture but can also be an event that can be a place for Indonesia's young generation or what is usually called Gen Z to learn and love their grandmother's cultural heritage. their ancestors.
