Amala Villas Ubud started with Christian’s late mother. Inspired by some of Bali’s most iconic resorts — The Legian, Amandari, Tandjung Sari — she imagined a place that felt timeless, welcoming, and true to Bali’s spirit. Her eye for design shaped the villa’s architecture and interiors, choices that still give Amala its character today.
For Christian, Amala was never just a business. In the beginning it was where his family spent holidays, later it became a spot to escape with friends. Over time, that easygoing retreat turned into something more serious: his work, his daily responsibility, and the place he now spends more time than anywhere else. “It went from recreational to professional; relaxed to no-nonsense — much to the chagrin of my staff,” he says with a grin.
What makes Amala special, though, isn’t only its story or design. It’s the people who’ve shaped it along the way. The staff who’ve been here for years, caring for the villa and building warm connections with guests. The newer team members are learning to step up, take responsibility, and support each other. The community in Sebali and Ubud, always ready to lend a hand when repairs or upgrades are needed. And of course, the guests who return again and again, trusting that Amala will always feel like home.
Some of the most meaningful moments are the simplest ones. Like the family who hugged every staff member with tears in their eyes after just a few nights’ stay. Or the guests who come back, year after year, because they know they’ll be welcomed with the same warmth.
Twenty years on, Amala means “home” to Christian. But it’s a home that belongs to many — not only to him or his late mother’s vision, but to the hands that keep it alive every day. Looking ahead, Christian hopes to see his team grow in confidence, bringing their own passions and personalities into the guest experience.
Because at the heart of Amala is trust: the trust that guests place in the villa, and the trust between the people who care for it. From one vision to many hands, Amala Villas Ubud continues its quiet journey — a place where legacy, community, and hospitality all come together.
