Following a harvest experience held in September, The Westin Resort & Spa Ubud, Bali continues its Memula Padi journey with a traditional rice planting activity, inviting guests to discover the next chapter in Bali’s agricultural cycle and the cultural traditions that connect its people to the land.
From harvesting mature rice to planting new seedlings, Memula Padi provides an insight into the cultivation cycle that sustains communities across Bali. It is more than just an agricultural activity; it reveals the patience, collective effort and respect for nature that have long shaped the island’s relationship with rice.

Guided by local farmers, guests are invited into the rice fields to take part in the planting process while learning about the knowledge and dedication required to cultivate each crop. Through hands-on participation and stories shared by the farmers, guests gain an understanding of the important role that rice plays in daily life, spiritual practices and community traditions in Bali.
At the heart of this cultural experience is Dewi Sri, a revered goddess associated with rice, fertility and prosperity in Balinese and wider Indonesian culture. Her significance reflects the deep cultural relationship between agriculture, gratitude and the natural world, offering guests a broader perspective on rice.
The experience also introduces guests to the traditional Balinese community-based irrigation system known as Subak. This system reflects the cooperation between farmers and the shared responsibility principles that sustain rice cultivation. Recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage cultural landscape, the Subak system illustrates how agricultural practices, community life and spiritual values have evolved together over the centuries.

By taking part in the harvesting and planting processes, guests can become part of the ongoing story of growth and renewal. These two activities provide a complementary insight into the journey from field to table, shedding light on the labour involved in producing every grain of rice and the collective wisdom that preserves these traditions.
“Memula Padi is more than just a farming activity; it's an opportunity to connect with the cultural heritage that has shaped Bali's landscape and way of life. By bringing our guests closer to local farmers and traditional agricultural practices, we hope to foster a greater appreciation of the relationship between people, nature and the traditions passed down through generations,” said Saraswati Subadia, General Manager of The Westin Resort & Spa, Ubud, Bali.
Through Memula Padi, The Westin Resort & Spa Ubud, Bali continues to create opportunities for guests to engage with local culture through first-hand experience. Rooted in the values of sustainability, community and mindful travel, the experience provides a deeper understanding of Bali, shaped not only by its landscapes, but also by the people and traditions that nurture them.
