Nespresso honors Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort for recycling over 41,000 coffee capsules amid growing sustainability and waste management…

As one of the world’s most visited destinations, Bali continues to face growing challenges around waste management. With more than 1.2 million tons of waste generated in 2024, according to data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), sustainability has become an increasingly important focus, particularly within the hospitality sector.

In response, more hotels across the island are taking meaningful steps to integrate responsible practices into their daily operations, including adopting recycling initiatives and embracing circular economy principles. One such effort is Nespresso’s used coffee capsule recycling program, where Nespresso collaborates with hospitality partners to ensure waste is not only reduced, but also repurposed in a more sustainable way.

As part of this ongoing initiative, Nespresso has awarded Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort with a Sustainability Award, recognizing the resort’s active participation in the program. Throughout 2025, the resort successfully returned more than 41,422 used coffee capsules for recycling, a reflection of its consistent efforts to embed sustainability into everyday operations.

“We are honored to receive this recognition from Nespresso,” said Jean-Pierre Joncas, General Manager of Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort. “It reflects our commitment to integrating sustainable practices across the resort. We believe that even simple actions, such as responsibly managing used coffee capsules, can contribute to a more sustainable future for Bali’s tourism industry.”

Nespresso’s recycling program is designed around a circular approach, where each used capsule is given a second life. For hotel partners, used capsules are collected alongside regular coffee deliveries before being transported to Nespresso’s facility in Jakarta. There, the aluminum is separated and repurposed into new products, while the coffee grounds are returned to coffee farms in West Java, where they are used as compost to support future crops.

“Looking ahead, we aim to continue strengthening our collaboration with partners such as Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort to expand the reach of this program,” said Mark Ashlin Senior, Senior Vice President of Kanmo Group. “Our goal is to ensure that every capsule can be responsibly recycled, while contributing to a more sustainable ecosystem.”
