What's New Bali recently enjoyed a heartwarming, smoky, and soulful evening at Tebu Merah Restaurant, nestled within Fairfield by Marriott Bali Legian. Their signature dining experience, Eats BBQ Day, is anything but an ordinary hotel buffet — it’s a lively, open-air celebration of flame-grilled goodness, relaxed summer vibes, and those simple pleasures that effortlessly leave a lasting impression. Here’s our flavorful story.

Captivated Upon Arrival

Upon arriving at the dining area, conveniently located just across from the hotel’s main lobby, we were greeted by the breezy, open-air setting of Tebu Merah Restaurant. The gentle strum of live acoustic music created a relaxed and inviting ambiance, perfectly suited for unwinding after a sun-soaked day in Bali. Enhancing the experience was the tantalizing aroma of sizzling meat and seafood drifting through the air, naturally drawing our attention to the live grill station, where chefs showcased their culinary skills in full view.

Simple BBQ-With A Twist

The menu struck a beautiful balance between variety and focus. It’s an all-you-can-eat BBQ buffet, but with a twist — many of the highlights are grilled on the spot, according to your order. Watching fresh prawns, squid, marlin, and tender cuts of grilled chicken hit the flames was half the fun, and biting into them — perfectly charred outside, juicy inside — was the other half. On the side, we had comforting portions of sauteed vegetables, grilled potato wedges, and even compact dim sum that added a delightful touch of warmth and flavor.

There’s also a Herbal Soup that surprised us with its soothing, clean taste. It came with a side of garlic bread, and together they made for a lovely pause between plates of smoky BBQ. It felt like a warm hug in a bowl — light but satisfying, and a clever palate cleanser that prepared us for round two (or three).

One thing that really stood out to us was the selection of sauces. We loved being able to tailor each bite to our tastes, whether we were dipping into mushroom sauce, black pepper, or a locally beloved Sambal Matah. But our favorite was the house-special Tebu Merah Sambal, a sweet-spicy concoction made with sugarcane extract instead of brown sugar. It had a naturally deep, earthy sweetness — a little nod to the restaurant’s namesake, which means Red Sugarcane in Bahasa — and it paired perfectly with everything on our plate.

Dessert was a light, colorful spread of assorted cakes and a fresh fruit platter — just enough to end the meal on a bright, refreshing note. And since it was Friday, we couldn’t resist pairing our BBQ feast with the restaurant’s Happy Hour deal: Street Free O’Clock, where signature drinks are Buy 1 Get 1 Free. We sipped on a cocktail called Summer in Bali (a zesty mix of Arak Bali, orange juice, lime, and Sprite) and a crisp Honey Ade mocktail with lemon, honey, and Sprite. Both were as easy-drinking and cheerful as the setting itself.

An Unpretentious Delight

What stood out most to us was how welcoming the experience truly is — open to both hotel guests and walk-in diners alike. Eats BBQ Day creates the perfect spot to unwind after a day at the beach or simply enjoy a relaxed evening. It’s not pretentious or overly formal — just delicious food, easygoing vibes, and an inviting atmosphere that encourages you to stay a little longer.

Fairfield by Marriott’s philosophy of “The Beauty in Simplicity” couldn’t be more perfectly captured than in this experience. The food isn’t overly complicated, but it’s done well. The setting isn’t flashy, but it’s effortlessly inviting. And the evening? It’s the kind you’ll remember — not because it was extravagant, but because it was exactly what you needed.

So if you find yourself in Legian on a Friday night, make your way to Tebu Merah Restaurant. Come hungry, bring friends, and get ready to taste the kind of BBQ that turns a simple meal into a sweet summer memory.
