Mandapa Spa at Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, in Ubud is a luxurious riverfront spa that helps us reconnect with ourselves.

Bali is a top-of-mind destination for wellness tourism. Many people fly to Bali seeking a slower pace of life and a chance to reconnect with themselves, especially to Ubud, where the atmosphere feels calmer and the greenery stretches endlessly. Whether it’s for yoga, spa treatments, meditation, or water purification rituals, wellness has become an integral part of the island’s identity, offering healing experiences that help us become the best version of ourselves.

And so, to reconnect with ourselves, we decided to escape the hustle and bustle for a while and experience a healing journey firsthand. This time, we made our way to the quieter and more cultural side of Bali: Ubud.

As our car slowly entered the Ubud area, I felt the unmistakable pull of Bali’s magnetic charm. Ubud greeted us with its calm energy and serene atmosphere, just like always. This time, our destination was not the famous Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary or a water purification ritual though, but an oasis of calm: Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. Situated along the Ayung River amidst the gentle hills of Ubud, Mandapa is a secluded sanctuary to relax the mind, body, and soul.

A few moments later, our car entered the property. The traditional Balinese design immediately caught my attention, along with the contemporary touch that made the place looks calm yet elegant. We stepped out of the car that had brought us there and said goodbye to our driver before taking in the peaceful surroundings. I paused for a moment, quietly enjoying the sense of calm the place offered. The property felt far removed from the outside world, and the only sounds we heard were birds chirping and the gentle rustling of trees nearby.

We were then welcomed warmly by the staff, who kindly asked whether we wanted to check in. We explained that we were there to experience the spa instead. With genuine smiles, they invited us into the Wantilan, the lounge open-air lobby area, and asked us to sit for a moment while waiting for the buggy that would take us down to Mandapa Spa.

We put our bags on one of the seats, and walk around to see the property from above. From Wantilan, which perched on the edge of a cliff, we could see the entire beautiful resort unfolding below. The villas, suites, dining venues, and the spa itself were all tucked beneath the hillside. Mandapa Spa, the place we were heading to, sat near the flowing Ayung River with lush jungle on the far opposite side. From above, the spa looked almost like a beautiful compound, standing gracefully between the river and the rice paddies.

Not long after, our buggy arrived. The staff greeted us back, and escorted us to our buggy. We then made our way down to the spa area. Along the road, dense greenery accompanied us on both sides, alongside private villas where guests were quietly enjoying their stay, as well as several dining venues including the well-known Kubu at Mandapa.

Shortly after, we arrived at Mandapa Spa. The entrance itself resembles an open-air gazebo, complete with comfortable sofas for guests to sit while waiting for the buggies to escort them back to their rooms, the lobby, or the dining facilities. The roof uses traditional Balinese materials such as ijuk, alang-alang, and wooden shingles, while the surrounding water features and lush greenery create a serene atmosphere. Nearby, the Ayung River flows gently, carrying the soothing sound of rushing water into the space.

From the gazebo, we stepped into the reception area. It felt spacious, almost like a hotel lobby, with wooden furnishings, white walls, white faucet, and traditional Balinese touches that made the room feel welcoming. The moment we entered, the staff greeted us warmly once again. On the right side of the lobby is the open-air waiting area, overlooking the Ayung River across the valley.

We were then served herbal tea and cold towels. The staff also gave us the spa menu book, which honestly felt more like reading a novel. The treatment selection was extensive, like, really really extensive, and surprisingly at a reasonable price for a luxury resort of this level.

The staff then explain that the spa facilities open daily from 9 AM to 9 PM, and offers a wide variety of wellness experiences, including facials, nail and hair treatments, body rituals, massages, and holistic wellness packages.

Here, at Mandapa Spa, guests are invited to “disconnect to reconnect,” a simple but meaningful philosophy that encourages visitors to step away from the noise of daily life and reconnect with nature, with themselves, and with the spiritual energy of Ubud.

We told the staff that we're here because we heard the spa was exceptionally amazing. We then had a one-on-one consultation with the staff, where they tried to tailor the experience we wanted with the treatment we needed. After the consultation, we decided to chose the Mepijet Massage, Mandapa Spa’s signature treatment that focuses on relieving tight and sore muscles.

The staff then kindly escorted us to our treatment villa. Yes, you didn’t read it wrong. Here, at Mandapa Spa, all treatment rooms are like villas. There are eight treatment rooms, each as spacious as a private villa itself. Three are designed specifically for couples, while the others are for individual guests.

The pathway leading to the treatment villas was really beautiful. It's almost like a dreamy wooden boardwalk surrounded by trees and tropical plants on both sides, and honestly, it would make a perfect spot for social media content.

As we walked through the alley, I noticed a spacious locker rooms on the left side, separated for men and women. The staff explained that there are also some wellness facilities that we can enjoy inside. Curious, I made a mental note to explore them after the treatment.

The treatment villas sat on the opposite side of the locker rooms. Once inside, we were genuinely surprised by how spacious the room was. It's just as big as a hotel room, and was designed beautifully and thoughtfully to make us feel comfortable. Near the entrance were changing areas, a shower room, and a washroom. We were then asked to change into massage robes before the staff escorted us to the outdoor deck area, that looks like a nice balcony.

From the deck, all we could see were endless shades of green, with the Ayung River flowing peacefully nearby. The scenery was incredibly calming. The sounds of nature, the cool breeze, and the stillness of the surroundings created a calm atmosphere. A comfortable sofa sat in one corner, and we were asked to sit there and relax. The therapists then confirmed our chosen treatment and introduced several massage oils for us to choose from. After confirming our treatments, the ritual then began with a foot bath and scrub at the deck.

A few minutes later, after having the foot scrub, the therapists escorted us to moved inside and asked us to lay down to begin the massage session. We laid down on the massage bed, and the therapists began to warm their hand first before applying the massage oil and began the treatment.

The massage was very indulging, combining gentle stretching with deep tissue techniques, and using Balinese-style firm strokes at just the right pressure. The therapist’s hands seemed to intuitively find every knot and point of my body's tension, slowly melting them away. Combined with the aromatic oils, the experience felt both grounding and rejuvenating.

During the massage, I think one of the best parts of the experience was hearing the distant sound of the Ayung River flowing outside. For me, the river itself is an element of meditation. The sound of the rushing water lulled me into complete relaxation, and paired with the incredible massage, the entire experience felt blissful. I was so relaxed that I’m certain I fell asleep halfway through the treatment.

And just like always, when we truly enjoying something, time passes quickly. Before we realized it, the massage had come to an end. The therapist woke me up gently, and told me quietly that the treatment has ended. I expressed my gratitude to the therapist for the incredible massage, and felt reluctant to move from the bed. I needed a few moments before finally gathered up my thoughts then got up and changed my clothes.

After getting dressed, we were escorted to the relaxation room, a dimly lit space just a few walks away from our villa. The room offered drinks and light snacks for guests who wanted to linger a little longer. Designed with descending levels, comfortable loungers, and curtains separating each lounger, the place felt so private and peaceful. All six loungers faced toward a balcony overlooking the surrounding forest and the Ayung River. We enjoyed warm ginger tea while quietly taking in the scenery for a while.

After spending some time there, I remembered my curiosity about the locker rooms. We then headed to the separate men and women locker rooms, and both surprised and amazed at the same time. Inside, we discovered additional wellness facilities including a steam room, sauna, and heated vitality pool. Interestingly, in-house guests are able to enjoy ALL of these facilities even without booking a treatment at Mandapa Spa. Since the sun would be setting soon, we decided to just take a look then take a shower there before finally ending our experience.

Although I’ve visited countless spas across Bali, Mandapa Spa stands out because of its meticulous attention to detail. Every element and aspect feels intentionally designed to make guests feel comfortable, pampered, and genuinely cared for. And Despite its luxurious service and design, the spa still makes us feel warm and secluded. It is undoubtedly one of Ubud’s true jewels and, so far, in my most honest opinion, the best spa experience I’ve ever had in Ubud.

As I walked out of Mandapa Spa and waited for the buggy to escort me back to the lobby, I felt lighter, both physically and mentally. Mandapa Spa is surely more than a wellness retreat, it’s a reminder that self-care, when done properly, is the way we reconnect with ourselves.
