As an International school devoted to empowering students to contribute to the world around them, Bali Island School teamed up with Livingseas for a coral restoration workshop on 16 April 2024. The workshop began with a presentation session led by Livingseas Asia where students were involved in an interactive discussion about coral reefs and the importance of taking care of our ecosystem. After the discussion, all participants boarded a speedboat to continue their workshop on a Pontoon Boat, a flattish boat that relies on floats to remain buoyant.
Doing a hands-on coral restoration, students were able to see living coral from the genus Acropora and using coral fragments plant these pieces on racks that were placed in a protected area by the professional divers of Livingseas Asia. They were also encouraged to name their reef stars, representing their commitment to marine conservation and environmental guidance. A leisurely snorkeling marked the end of their workshop in a fun way.
Aside from doing part of BIS’ commitment to the environment, the coral workshop was designated to celebrate Earth Day. With the Livingseas team leading the way, students explored the ecosystems of reefs while gaining valuable knowledge about marine conservation and how we can preserve our oceans.
"This learning experience was an amazing opportunity to combine active learning while collaborating with a local NGO to help restore Bali's coral reefs. We hope to make a long-term partnership with Living Seas as part of the Service as Action Program and the Bali Island School Co Curricular Learning experiences," said Mr. Jay Kumpel, the Learning Support Teacher at Bali Island School.
