Meet Yunindra Hardino, the new General Manager of Swiss-Belresort Dago Heritage Bandung. Discover his journey in hospitality, leadership philosophy,…

A career in hospitality doesn't always begin with a plan. For Yunindra Hardino, it started with an unexpected opportunity in 2007 and grew into a journey spanning nearly two decades across several hotel brands and destinations in Indonesia. Having worked his way up from the frontline, he now takes the helm as General Manager of Swiss-Belresort Dago Heritage Bandung, bringing with him a people-oriented approach and a focus on creating meaningful guest experiences.

As he begins this new chapter, Yunindra is looking to build on what makes the resort distinctive, from its scenic Upper Dago setting overlooking the historic Dago Heritage 1917 Golf Course to its service and atmosphere. We caught up with him to talk about his journey into hospitality, his vision for the resort, and a few of his favourite things about Bandung.

1. Could you tell us how you first got into the hospitality industry? Was working in a hotel always part of your plan?

Not at all. It happened quite unexpectedly. I was running my own business at the time, which required me to travel frequently between Bandung and Yogyakarta. After my mother passed away, I returned to Balikpapan. A friend of mine was working at Novotel Balikpapan, which had just opened in 2007, and offered me an opportunity to join the hotel.

Since I had a good command of English, I started as a receptionist. In 2013, I also took on a role at ibis. That was how I found my way into hospitality, and it eventually became the career I've pursued ever since.

2. You started your career on the frontline and have worked your way up to senior management. What has been the most valuable lesson you've learned throughout your career?

For me, it's all about continuous growth. We have to keep learning every day, no matter how experienced we become. There's always something new to discover, and I believe we should never stop improving ourselves.

It's also important not to underestimate others or look down on people because of their positions. We all start somewhere, and I know that firsthand. No matter where we are in our careers, we should always remember where we came from and treat others with respect.

3. After working with several hotel brands and properties across Indonesia, what attracted you to Swiss-Belresort Dago Heritage Bandung?

I actually stayed at Swiss-Belresort Dago Heritage Bandung in 2021 when I was working at Pullman Ciawi Vimala Hills Resort Spa & Convention. I've always enjoyed Bandung, and I remember being impressed by the view from the hotel during that stay.

The location is excellent, and the property itself has a lot of character. The combination of its setting, the beautiful views, and the overall atmosphere made a lasting impression on me. When the opportunity came to join the resort, it felt like an exciting next step in my career.

4. Bandung has an increasingly competitive hospitality scene. What do you think makes Swiss-Belresort Dago Heritage Bandung different from other hotels in the city?

The competition is getting stronger, with more hotels entering the market, so we have to keep finding ways to stand out. A hotel is not defined by its facilities and products alone. Newer properties may have attractive features, but what truly sets a hotel apart is the experience it offers.

For us, that means focusing on our service standards, ambience, and the little details that make a stay memorable. Our location in Upper Dago, the beautiful views overlooking the golf course, and the property's heritage character are all part of our identity. These are the qualities we want to build on while creating an experience that guests cannot easily find elsewhere.

5. As the new General Manager, what are your main priorities for the hotel, and are there any improvements guests can look forward to?

My first priority is to enhance the overall guest experience. A hotel is not simply a place to sleep and eat; it should be somewhere guests feel welcomed, cared for, and connected through genuine human interaction. For me, that personal touch makes a real difference.

Maintaining the property and ensuring our facilities remain in good condition are also important. Beyond that, we are looking at organising more activities during holiday periods and exploring a wider variety of food offerings together with our chefs. We want to keep giving guests new reasons to visit, enjoy their stay, and return in the future.

6. How would you describe your leadership style, and what do you believe makes a strong and effective hotel team?

I would describe my leadership style as democratic. I'm open-minded and welcome new ideas, and I believe open communication is essential to building a strong team.

I also want to treat my colleagues as partners. Rather than seeing leadership as a one-way relationship, I believe we should work together, listen to one another, and find solutions as a team. Everyone brings something valuable to the table, and when people feel heard and supported, we can work towards the same goals more effectively.

7. Bandung offers plenty of options for staycations and family getaways. How do you plan to strengthen the resort's appeal and stand out in the city's competitive hospitality scene?

I believe the key is to offer more than just accommodation. Guests today have plenty of choices, so we need to give them a reason to choose us, whether it's the experience, the service, the atmosphere, or the activities available during their stay.

At Swiss-Belresort Dago Heritage Bandung, we want to make the most of what we already have while continuing to improve. Our scenic location and resort character are important strengths, but they need to be supported by attentive service and experiences that feel personal. We also want to keep our offerings fresh, particularly during holiday periods, so that both returning and first-time guests have something to look forward to.

8. Bandung is one of Indonesia's popular tourism destinations. What do you think could help the city develop its tourism industry further?

I think public transportation is one of the important factors. Better transport options could help reduce traffic congestion, which remains a challenge for people travelling around Bandung.

When tourists arrive, they should have convenient ways to explore different parts of the city without relying entirely on private vehicles. Improving public transportation would make getting around easier and could encourage more visitors to discover what Bandung and its surrounding areas have to offer. A more accessible city would be beneficial for both tourists and the local community.

9. Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? And do you have any favourite local food spots in Bandung?

I’m a big football fan and part of Arsenal Indonesia Supporters. I also enjoy running, playing football, listening to music, and travelling whenever I get the chance.

When it comes to food in Bandung, I tend to gravitate towards local favourites, especially the kind you find at casual, street-side spots. Some of my go-to choices are Nasi Timbel Bawean, Bubur Ayam Pelana, and sop kaki at the stall in front of Borma Setiabudi. I enjoy these simple local food experiences, which are part of what makes Bandung such a fun city to explore.

10. Looking ahead, what is your biggest hope for Swiss-Belresort Dago Heritage Bandung under your leadership?

My hope is for more people to discover Swiss-Belresort Dago Heritage Bandung. Building awareness and increasing our exposure are important, but we also want to maintain the trust of our existing guests and give them more reasons to return while reaching new markets.

At the same time, we want to keep raising our service standards, make the guest experience more personalised, and continue improving our food offerings. Most importantly, I hope to build a solid team that shares the same commitment to hospitality and growth. Ultimately, I want to see the hotel continue moving forward, becoming an even stronger destination and creating memorable experiences that guests will want to come back for.
