This year, The Westin Resort & Spa Ubud, Bali celebrated Indonesia's Independence Day with a unique event that looked both forward and inward. The resort honoured the roots of Balinese culture by inviting a living legend to perform.

Departing from the usual festivities, the resort welcomed guests to a special evening centred around Niang Soli, Bali's oldest Balinese dancer, whose lifelong devotion to sacred dance reflected the spirit of the occasion. Her performance was a poignant reminder that true independence is about moving forward while staying rooted in identity and heritage.

Against the tranquil backdrop of the resort’s Pool Bar, the evening unfolded under the open sky, with the surrounding jungle providing a natural stage. Guests gathered poolside, surrounded by the lush greenery that has long defined Ubud's timeless charm, to witness Niang Soli's performance — a rare and intimate insight into a tradition passed down through the generations.

They were also treated to a selection of canapés, offering a taster of the Ubud Megibung Dinner at Tabia Restaurant on 16 August. Drawing inspiration from the traditional Balinese communal dining custom of megibung, the dinner invited guests to share a feast that reflected the values celebrated throughout the evening: togetherness, gratitude and cultural preservation.

Through this celebration, The Westin Resort & Spa Ubud brought the spirit of Indonesia's independence to life by honouring our roots, even as we continue to move forward.
