On Friday afternoon, guests at The Westin Resort & Spa Ubud stepped into the rice fields at The Farm to experience a traditional rice harvest alongside the team. Rather than simply observing the harvest, guests were invited to take part. With their hands immersed in the work and their feet close to the earth, they learned about the traditional harvesting process and discovered a more humble and grounded side of life in Ubud. It was an opportunity to experience the rhythm of a tradition passed down through generations, while slowing down, reconnecting with nature, and appreciating the simple joy of working together.
For Indonesians, rice is much more than just a staple food. It is an integral part of daily life, nourishing families and bringing them together around the dining table, while also carrying a sense of familiarity and home. Whether served with vegetables, fish, meat or sambal, rice has long been at the heart of the Indonesian meal. However, the journey of rice from field to table is often overlooked.
The harvest offered guests a different perspective on the journey of the rice. Before it reaches the plate, rice starts out with the earth, the changing seasons, and the people who care for it. It grows slowly, nurtured by many hands, eventually becoming something that is shared. The harvest was grown with care. It was gathered by hand. Most importantly of all, it was shared.
This spirit of sharing is also central to the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which is about living in harmony with the divine, with one another, and with nature.
In the rice fields, this philosophy can be experienced rather than simply explained. Caring for the land and respecting its rhythms reflects the connection with nature. The connection between people is forged through working together, sharing knowledge, and celebrating the harvest collectively. The connection with the divine is expressed through gratitude for the land and the nourishment it provides.
After all, there is a story worth remembering before rice reaches our plate.
