A visa is an official document issued by a government allowing foreign nationals to enter, stay, or conduct activities in its territory for a specified period. Applying typically involves filling out forms, submitting supporting documents, and sometimes attending a brief interview.

Just like in other countries, foreign nationals must hold a valid visa to enter Indonesia. In Indonesia, visas are tailored to match your purpose—be it tourism, work, study, or family stay.

Choosing the correct visa ensures smooth entry and legal compliance. This comprehensive guide breaks down each visa type with clarity and finesse—perfect for anyone planning their next move in paradise.

Common visa types in Indonesia for foreign visitors

Business Visa

Designed for foreigners visiting Indonesia for business-related purposes such as attending meetings, conferences, negotiations, or project oversight. While this visa allows participation in business activities, it does not permit recipients to work or receive income from Indonesian entities. A local company sponsor is required to obtain this visa.

There are two main types:

- Single-Entry Business Visa: Allows one entry into Indonesia for a specific business purpose. Valid for 60 days and extendable up to four times. Once the visa holder leaves Indonesia, the visa becomes invalid.

- Multiple-Entry Business Visa: Valid for up to one year, allowing multiple entries. Each stay is limited to 60 days and cannot be extended. Ideal for ongoing business activities without the need to reapply for a visa each time.

Diplomatic Visa

This visa is granted to government officials or representatives of foreign states on official duty in Indonesia. Typically issued to diplomats, ambassadors, or international organisation representatives, this visa comes with diplomatic privileges such as legal immunity and exemption from certain immigration rules—ensuring smooth diplomatic operations in Indonesia.

Limited Stay Visa (ITAS/KITAS)

For longer stays, a Limited Stay Visa (also called ITAS or KITAS) is required. This visa typically allows a stay of up to one year, with extensions depending on the purpose.

Types of ITAS:

- Work ITAS is for foreign nationals officially employed in Indonesia, sponsored by a local company. Typically valid for up to two years and renewable for a total of five years. Employers must first secure a work permit and pay a mandatory development fund to the Manpower Ministry. Upon arrival, the individual must report to immigration within seven days.
- Spouse ITAS is if you're legally married to an Indonesian citizen, sponsored by your spouse. This visa grants limited stay rights and allows your under-18 children to reside with you in Indonesia—perfect for mixed-nationality families.

Permanent Stay Permit (KITAP)

After five consecutive years of holding a KITAS, you may apply for a Permanent Stay Permit (KITAP), valid for up to 25 years. Although long-term, the permit must be validated every 5 years. Retirees may apply for a KITAP directly, without first holding a KITAS.

Retirement Visa

This is available to foreigners aged 55 and over who plan to reside in Indonesia for more than 60 days. Valid for one year and extendable up to five times, this visa type holds a maximum stay of five years. Applicants need an Indonesian sponsor and must first receive approval from immigration authorities before applying at an embassy or consulate. It’s an ideal option for retirees looking to enjoy long-term residence in Indonesia. Click here for the ultimate guide.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)

The Visa on Arrival is granted to citizens of specific countries upon entry into Indonesia. It's primarily for short-term tourism or business trips. It’s valid for 30 days and extendable once for another 30 days. No prior application needed—simply present your documents at the airport upon arrival. Check out our guide to VoA here. There's also an updated fee you need to keep an eye on, here.
