Bank Indonesia (BI) is expanding the number of countries where the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) can be used for shopping. This way, cross-border QRIS usage enables users to transact in other countries without needing to convert or exchange to the local currency.
Cross-border QRIS is quite simple

According to Bank Indonesia, this innovation benefits foreign tourists in Indonesia as well, who can make purchases by scanning Indonesian merchants’ QRIS codes using their domestic payment apps, and vice versa.
Here's how:
- Download a banking or financial service app
- Open the payment app and select the "Scan QRIS" menu
- Enter the amount to be paid or transferred in your home currency. Confirm the destination and amount in foreign currency (the amount will be automatically converted).
- Enter your PIN, and you will receive a notification confirming a successful transaction.
The cross-border QRIS payment is now complete. The notification will indicate that the QRIS transaction was successful.
So, which countries can currently use QRIS for transactions?

Several Asian countries had already partnered with Bank Indonesia to implement QRIS. The following countries currently support QRIS for payments:
- Brunei Darussalam
- Japan
- Laos
- Malaysia
- Philippines
- Singapore
- South Korea
- Thailand
- Vietnam
More countries will be added
Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, Filianingsih Hendarta, stated that the cross-border QRIS digital payment service continues to expand. This development is part of BI’s strategy to expand the digital ecosystem and strengthen the competitiveness of the national payment system on the international stage.
"This cross-border initiative keeps growing. Countries that already support it include Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
And coming soon—those already in line—we will have Japan and India, South Korea, and possibly China and Saudi Arabia," added Hendarta.
