From a Legend to an Icon: An Italian Story
The history of Disaronno began in one of the most creative periods in Italian history, the Renaissance. In 1525, artist Bernardino Luini, a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci, was commissioned to embellish the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Miracles in Saronno. As a model to depict the Madonna in one of his four main paintings, “The Adoration of the Magi”, he chose a beautiful local innkeeper. As a mark of her gratitude she prepared for the artist a special gift of a flask full of a fragrant, delicate amber-coloured liqueur. This is how the legend of Disaronno was born, from a simple gesture of kindness and a special mix of secret ingredients.
Let’s go back to 1600: in that period, many families used to distill their own liqueurs, digestives and medicines against every type of illness. The Reina were just one of those families and Giovanni Reina rediscovered the ancient recipe of this amber liqueur.
The recipe was then passed secretly from one generation to the next, right up the early 1900s, when Domenico Reina decided to open a workshop, which took the name of “Domenico Reina Coloniali”, situated in the heart of Saronno. Soon the shop became a crossroads where people stopped in to taste and buy his products.
In 1947, ILLVA SARONNO: Industria, Lombarda, Liquori, Vini & Affini, was founded in the wake of this artisanal activity and, today, Disaronno is distributed in more than 160 countries worldwide.

The Italian Style
Disaronno Originale, or simply Disaronno, is not just an Amaretto, but it’s the world’s favourite Italian liqueur according to the IWSR 2023 - International Wine & Spirit Research This one-of-a-kind, “square cap” bottle in shiny hammered glass was created in the 1970s by a master glassmaker from Murano (Venice) who created an iconic piece of craftwork.
In 1999 the Disaronno’s bottle was exhibited at the Louvre, in Paris, during the exhibition “L'objet du Design, 99 objets pour un siécle”. The unmistakable Disaronno shape is now recognized worldwide as one of the symbols of Italian Style.
A Smooth, Versatile Taste
Disaronno stands out for its unique aroma with a sweet character that gives a warm and intense sensation on the palate. Its amber color and the persistent fragrance make the favourite liqueur of entire generations.
Disaronno is perfect neat, on the rocks, or protagonist in iconic cocktails such as the Godfather, which has been on the IBA list of the world's best cocktails since 1986 and the Disaronno Sour, as well as other intriguing and innovative versions.
The 500th anniversary celebration of Disaronno is an opportunity to honor its heritage and look to the future, while preserving its essence: a proudly ambassador of the Italian Dolce Vita, embodying elegance and taste, tradition and modernity and unmistakable Italian style.
