Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration, under the Immigration and Corrections Ministry, has officially announced that foreign nationals are now eligible to apply for a limited stay visa (VITAS) to pursue nonformal education in the country.

The E30 visa permits holders to stay in Indonesia for either one or two years, depending on the visa duration requested.

Applications for nonformal education visas are submitted online via evisa.imigrasi.go.id

To apply, foreign nationals must have a sponsor—either an individual or a nonformal educational institution. This new policy, effective as of Tuesday, 15th July 2025, is designed to accommodate foreigners seeking to enrol in language courses, professional or vocational training programs, and other nonformal educational pursuits to support their career development.

The visa requirements align with those for other visa types: a passport valid for at least six months, proof of sufficient funds for living expenses while in Indonesia (minimum of USD 2,000), and a recent colour passport photo.

As for the non-tax state revenue (PNBP) fees, the cost of the E30 visa is set at:

- IDR 6 million for a one-year stay permit
- IDR 8.5 million for a two-year stay permit

Formal education visas extension upgrades

The Directorate General also introduced extended stay options for formal education visas. The E30A visa for primary and secondary education and the E30B visa for higher education now offer a four-year stay permit—a significant increase from the previous one- or two-year durations.

Applicants for the E30A and E30B education visas may also be sponsored by either individuals or educational institutions.

The PNBP fees for formal education visas are as follows:

- IDR 12 million for a four-year stay
- IDR 8.5 million for two years
- IDR 6 million for one year

Indonesia is home to over 3,115 higher education institutions, including 125 public universities. He emphasised the country’s strong potential as a destination for international students, noting that several Indonesian universities are ranked among the world’s top 300 and that subjects related to cultural studies remain especially popular among foreign learners. This policy, therefore, opens up greater opportunities for foreign nationals to pursue both formal and nonformal education in Indonesia.
