Bali adds new flights from Australia as Jetstar and AirAsia expand routes, easing travel costs despite global fuel price pressures.

Amid global uncertainties and the ripple effects of the Middle East conflict on fuel prices and flight costs, new airline routes and expanded connectivity are opening up more affordable travel options for international visitors to Bali. With demand continuing to rise, these developments are expected to further strengthen Bali’s position as one of the world’s most desirable destinations, while also encouraging travelers to secure the best flight deals early and plan their trips wisely.

While Bali remains one of the world’s most desirable travel destinations, the island is not entirely immune to global pressures. Ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, have begun to ripple into the travel sector, driving up fuel prices and contributing to higher airfares throughout 2026.

These rising costs have started to impact travel decisions, with some tourists delaying or reconsidering long-haul trips. As a result, Bali’s tourism growth, while still significant, is facing a more cautious pace compared to previous years.

Even so, demand for Bali has not disappeared. The island continues to attract strong interest from international and domestic travelers alike, with projections still targeting more than 7 million international arrivals in 2026. Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport remains the second busiest in Indonesia after Jakarta, reflecting its enduring global appeal.

In response to these challenges, airlines are beginning to adapt, introducing new routes and increasing connectivity to help stabilize demand and offer more competitive travel options.

Low-cost airline Jetstar has recently just launched its first-ever direct flight service from Melbourne Avalon Airport to Denpasar. Australian tourists remain the most frequent international arrivals to Bali, and more than 1.5 million Aussies visit the island each year.

Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully noted that the launch is being celebrated as a proud moment for Jetstar and the region. This launch is its first-ever direct flights to Bali (Denpasar) from Melbourne Avalon Airport, marking the return of international travel for passengers and bringing in a new era of low fares for Melbourne’s west, Geelong and the Bellarine region.

The new Bali route is part of Jetstar’s growth at Melbourne Avalon Airport, which also includes the return of flights to Adelaide and increased capacity to Brisbane. Together, these new and expanded routes add more than 330,000 low fare seats a year to Melbourne’s second airport gateway.

Jetstar’s first international route from Melbourne Avalon Airport, and the airport's return to international flying, will operate five return flights per week aboard Jetstar’s Airbus A321LR. The service adds more than 120,000 seats and connects Victoria’s west to Bali in just over six hours.

The addition of the route further strengthens Jetstar’s Bali network, becoming the tenth direct Australian service to the destination.

Beyond Victoria, Jetstar is also expanding access from other parts of Australia. The airline recently launched its first-ever direct service connecting the Sunshine Coast and Bali, making it easier and more affordable for travelers from the region to reach Asia.

Jetstar is the first carrier to ever offer flights between the Sunshine Coast and Bali as part of its commitment to providing more choice and affordability so customers can take off more for less.

With these new services from the Gold Coast, Newcastle and Avalon (Melbourne), Jetstar offers a total of 11 routes from Australia and up to 210 flights in and out of Bali every week in 2026.

Meanwhile, Indonesia AirAsia also launched a direct flight service between Bali and Melbourne. The new service is now operating daily and not only connects travelers between Bali and Melbourne but also destinations across Australia and Indonesia.

The Acting President Director of Indonesia AirAsia, Captain Achmad Sadikin Abdurachman, said that Melbourne is one of the most popular destinations for tourists, students, and business people from Indonesia, as well as a key market for Bali tourism. The opening of the route was described as an important step in strengthening the airline’s international network and expanding its reach across the Asia and Australia region.

The Melbourne-Denpasar service is operating on flight number QZ 411, departing from Melbourne at 6 am daily and touching down in Bali at 8.35 am local time. The outbound service departs from Ngurah Rai at 8.10 pm, arriving in Melbourne at 5 am local time on flight number QZ 410.

Operating daily with an Airbus A320, the service will add more than 130,000 seats annually through Melbourne Airport, providing Victorian travellers greater choice and value when planning their next Bali or Indonesian getaway.

The Melbourne to Denpasar service marks AirAsia’s third Australian route to Bali, complementing the airline’s existing services from Perth and Adelaide. The airline recently increased frequency out of Adelaide in response to rising demand from Australian travellers.

Travel Outlook Amid Global Pressures

While geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to influence global oil prices and, in turn, flight costs throughout 2026, Bali’s expanding flight network suggests strong resilience in travel demand. The addition of new low-cost routes is expected to help offset rising prices, making it easier for travelers to access the island.

These developments are also likely to support Bali in reaching its ambitious tourism targets, bringing in even more international visitors despite external challenges. With increased seat capacity and competitive fares, airlines are clearly betting on Bali’s enduring appeal.

Tourists planning a trip to Bali are advised to take advantage of current flight deals while they are still available. It is also essential for travelers to secure fully comprehensive travel insurance at the time of booking flights, accommodation, and experiences, ensuring protection against any unexpected disruptions.
