Bali sees surge in domestic tourists during Eid al-Fitr, with traffic congestion, busy hotspots, and rising airport passenger numbers.

Bali is bracing for a significant increase in visitor numbers as the island transitions from the silence of Nyepi into the busy Eid al-Fitr holiday period. The festival, one of the most important in the Islamic calendar, sees millions of Indonesians traveling across the country to celebrate with family.

As one of Indonesia’s top domestic destinations, Bali has been welcoming hundreds of thousands of tourists, especially local tourists these few days.

Heavy Traffic Across the Island

A large number of travelers are arriving overland from East Java, Lombok, and East Nusa Tenggara, many bringing private vehicles. This is expected to worsen existing traffic congestion across the island.nAuthorities are advising both locals and tourists to allow extra travel time, especially when heading to key areas or tourist attractions. Travelers flying out of Bali are also urged to arrive at the airport earlier than usual due to potential delays on the road.

To manage the surge, additional personnel have been deployed at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. A total of 2,598 officers are on standby as part of the 2026 Eid al-Fitr Transportation Post, which will remain active until the end of the return travel period.

Airport officials reported strong growth in passenger traffic. During the first three days of operations, the airport served 188,655 passengers, an increase of 12.9 percent compared to 167,078 passengers during the same period in 2025. In response to high demand, more than 15 additional domestic flight routes have also been introduced.

Tourist Hotspots and Attractions See Increased Demand

Popular areas such as Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak have been significantly busier, along with their beaches. Cultural and tourist attractions including Penglipuran Village, Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park, Ubud Water Palace, and Tanah Lot Temple have also seen increased visitor numbers.

Shopping centers such as Beachwalk Shopping Center in Kuta and ICON Mall in Sanur have also recorded higher foot traffic, with special Eid events taking place.

One of the most popular places in Bali, Kebun Raya Bali in Bedugul, Tabanan, has emerged as a popular destination during the holiday period. Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ni Luh Enik Ermawati, noted a clear increase in visitor numbers throughout Eid holidays.

According to management, visitor numbers have risen sharply in the days following Nyepi. Daily visits averaged around 4,000 people, with approximately 4,000 visitors recorded on March 20 and 21, and 5,000 on March 22. This marks a significant increase compared to typical weekday figures of 400 to 500 visitors.

Bali Among Top Eid Travel Destinations

According to accommodation search data from digital travel platform Agoda, Bali ranks among the top three destinations for Eid travel, alongside Yogyakarta and Bandung. The data reflects a strong preference for destinations that offer both relaxation and cultural experiences.

The surge in domestic travel highlights Bali’s continued appeal among local tourists during major holiday periods. With visitor numbers expected to remain high throughout the Eid holiday this week, authorities and tourism operators are continuing to monitor conditions and manage crowd flow across key destinations.
