The Prolific Initiator: Exclusive Interview With Kiki Utara

1. What were the defining moments that set the course for your marketing and public relations career?

I consider myself fortunate to have been born into a disciplined military family with numerous successful relatives in the entertainment industry as well. These early influences shaped my networking skills and personality, forming the foundation for my career in marketing and public relations. These were pivotal moments, essentially present since my early days, guiding my path in these professions from the very start.

2. How did your experiences as a model and instructor at Carrie Models Singapore influence your shift into marketing and PR?

I was discovered by the late Rendi, a renowned salon owner in Jakarta on late 80’s. He saw a unique blend of Asian look (Indonesian, Chinese, Japanese) features in my face. This led me to becoming a cover model for various teen and fashion magazines. Subsequently, I met Bara Pattirajawane (later known as one of Indonesia's most acclaimed celebrity chefs), who was associated with Carrie Models in Indonesia. He hired me as a model, and through this, I honed my networking skills and continuously improved my presentation. One memorable experience was being one of only three Indonesians selected for a prestigious fashion show by Alfred Dunhill. I transitioned into being an instructor and garnered invaluable insights into marketing and networking from my peers during my time in the modeling world.

3. You've held diverse roles, including Head of Marketing PR and Marketing Agent. How have these positions contributed to your growth and skillset?

Through these roles, I've become better at showcasing my positive side in my daily interactions. I've learned not to be pretentious and to effectively navigate between friendships and work. As I've grown older, I believe in focusing more on ourselves while still maintaining relationships with acquaintances. Personal touches are crucial to staying connected with them, like remembering their birthdays and sending them personal greetings.

4. Could you share about your experience as the owner of Warung ArsaBetawi Bali and your role as Director of Marketing and PR at Canna Bali Beach Club? How has entrepreneurship impacted your life and career?

Warung Arsa Betawi was a longtime dream to me, and it became reality thanks to my best friend, Irie Wulandari, who gave me the partnership opportunity with her to co-own and manage this restaurant. I've always wanted to own a unique eatery, a space that brings people together regardless of their social status. Warung Arsa was established during the COVID era and garnered significant popularity, especially among Jakarta residents craving authentic Betawi cuisine during self-isolation. At Canna Bali, I was drawn to the project because it was locally owned and operated, emphasizing local employees and primarily focusing on indigenous cuisine. These experiences have greatly impacted my life, especially in terms of finances, networking, and business knowledge.

5. What accomplishment or experience are you most proud of in your career, and why?

For me, my most significant achievement is maintaining relationships with the people I've known throughout my life. This includes former bosses and friends from different parts of the world and regions. Maintaining these relationships is my greatest achievement. Material possessions and fame can be pursued, but cherished relationships are the most valuable to me.

6. As a freelance lifestyle contributor for Harper's Bazaar Indonesia, how did this role deepen your understanding of media and its relationship with PR and marketing? Could you share a memorable experience from your time as a lifestyle contributor?

In my role at Harper's Bazaar, I was initially offered the position due to my extensive network. My task was to attend fashion events, evaluate them, and write reviews on people's attire and the events. From this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of the symbiotic relationship between media, PR, and marketing. Marketing represents the product, PR extends its image, and media serves as the tool. These three elements are interconnected. The most memorable aspect of this role was that more people began to recognize me as a Harper's Bazaar contributor, leading to many individuals, even those I hadn't met, seeking my opinion on their appearance.

7. What values or principles guide your decisions and actions in both your professional and personal lives?

My motto is: 'I do everything with passion and always follow chemistry.' In essence, whether at work or in daily interactions, I prioritize comfort. This applies not only to myself but also to those around me. Life, work, and social interactions become more manageable and enjoyable with comfort. Additionally, I believe that work should be done with heart and chemistry. Without passion and genuine interest, things won't progress well in the end.

8. If you could advise your younger self starting out in your career, what guidance would you provide?

I would say, 'Whatever you do, follow your heart and passion.' That's the initial advice, and then, 'reflect on yourself and envision what you want to be in the future.' Despite a solid education, it might not translate into a meaningful career if it's not pursued with passion and heart.

9. Tell us something about you that people may not know about.

People generally perceive me as a cheerful and happy individual. However, behind this, I'm like everyone else, dealing with thoughts and concerns. But I live by the principle of facing each day with a smile. Others just need to feel at ease around me; they don't need to know more about my personal life than that.
