The relaunch marks a significant milestone for the island’s public transportation infrastructure

Bali has officially reinstated its public bus service, Trans Metro Dewata, following a temporary suspension due to government funding limitations earlier this year. The relaunch marks a significant milestone for the island’s public transportation infrastructure, restoring an essential mobility option for both locals and tourists navigating the central and southern regions of the island.

A Vital Public Transportation

Trans Metro Dewata plays a vital role in helping thousands of residents commute daily for work, education, and personal errands. With its accessible routes and affordable pricing, it also provides an increasingly attractive option for travelers seeking a more economical way to move between Bali’s major resort and tourism hubs. From the lively streets of Kuta to the cultural charm of Ubud and the serene beaches of Nusa Dua, the bus network connects key destinations with efficiency and ease.

All six of the bus system’s core routes are now fully operational. Though the network has returned to its complete route offering, the number of daily trips has been reduced from 105 to 75 to improve operational efficiency. As a result, passengers can expect slightly longer wait times between buses, averaging around 17 to 19 minutes, compared to the previous 12 to 13-minute intervals.

The (Scenic) Daily Route

Service begins early each day, with the first bus on Route 1 departing from Kuta Parking Centre at 4:30 AM. Other routes—including those running between Ubung Terminal and Ngurah Rai International Airport, Sanur Terminal, Monkey Forest Parking Centre, Bali State Polytechnic, and Nusa Dua—start operations at 5:00 AM. Most services conclude by 7:00 PM, with the exact timing varying slightly by route. This schedule ensures that the bus system remains a viable option for morning and evening commuters, as well as daytime travelers.

Passengers are encouraged to use the MitraDarat app, which is available for download on all major smartphone platforms. The app offers real-time bus tracking, route information, and timetables, making it easier for both locals and international visitors to plan their journeys efficiently.

Cashless, Hassle-Less?

The fare for a ride on Trans Metro Dewata remains affordable at just IDR 4,400 per trip. Payment is facilitated through the national QRIS digital payment system, which allows users to scan a code and instantly pay via mobile wallet or linked bank account. This system was designed to simplify the transaction process, particularly for foreigners who may not have local currency on hand.

However, the return of the service has not been without challenges. Authorities have identified instances of fare evasion, with some passengers presenting fake or outdated QR code screenshots instead of completing a legitimate transaction. In response, the bus operator is implementing a new layer of security: a voice notification system that audibly confirms when a QRIS payment has been successfully processed. This enhancement, currently being expanded across all routes after a successful trial, will help ensure that fare collection is fair and accurate.

An Alternative From Online Transport

While private taxis, ride-hailing apps like Grab and GoJek, and scooter rentals remain the preferred modes of transport for many tourists in Bali, the revival of the Trans Metro Dewata offers a welcome alternative. As sustainable travel gains traction and road congestion continues to impact the island’s popular zones, a reliable public bus system stands out as a forward-thinking solution.

The return of Trans Metro Dewata reinforces Bali’s commitment to improving transportation accessibility and sustainability. With enhanced security features and a renewed focus on efficiency, the system is poised to play an even greater role in supporting the island’s dynamic flow of residents and travelers alike.
