Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach A Spiritual Journey of Heritage

Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach, tucked in northwest Bali, Seminyak is a proud neighbourhood full of rich culture and heritage, where spirituality is intertwined with everyday life. Seminyak is also home to some of the world’s most renowned bars and restaurants, a vibrant retail scene, and has served as the inspiration for numerous artists and creative industry players.

A Spiritual Journey

  • The majority of Bali’s population practice a unique form of Hinduism and belong to a religious community called a “Banjar.” Each day the establishments in the neighbourhood are blessed with small offerings to local spirits.

  • "Camplung Tanduk” is a legend that dates back to the 15th century. The legend says that a priest from the Gelgel Kingdom, Dndhyang Niratha, gave an order to one of the kingdom’s subjects to sail to Seminyak Beach. When the subject arrived, he suddenly grew a horn (Tanduk) on his head. The priest and his follower built a shrine (Pelinggih), now known as Camplung Tanduk Temple. The temple is mere steps away from the resort.

  • Today, Seminyak Beach is dotted with Camplung Trees. These tress are known for their white-colored flowers, shaped similar to horns.

Life’s Rich Fabric

  • From the celebrated Batik dyed on a piece of cloth to the intricate hand-woven Tenun and Songket, Indonesia is known for its rich textiles and intricate techniques passed down for generations. These traditions are renowned as part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

  • Textiles play an important role in Balinese rituals. These fabrics are known as “Bebali.” The Balinese believe they have the power to purify sacred spaces.

Story-Inspired Details

Streaming Sunlight

  • The lobby bar pays homage to the neighbourhood’s high regard for nature. Taking it a step further, the plants adorning the bar are also used in the cocktails.

  • The Pohon Pole tree growing in the lobby is the hotel’s iconic centerpiece. Brought all the way from Sanur, this is one of the island’s most sacred trees. Sunlight streams through the opening in the ceiling where the tree grows.

Heritage & History

  • Multi-coloured chairs adorn the lobby, evoking a traditional village (Banjar) where people bring their own chairs and meet under the trees. Lighting is inspired by floating lanterns released in the air on Seminyak nights.

  • Traditional checkerboard Poleng and wood-carving artistry is used on the ceiling. The brown hues in the furniture pay homage to the Pohon Pole.

Rustic Relaxation

  • The Spa Villa is inspired by huts in the paddy fields. The design is meant to feel like one of the hut’s rustic interiors.

  • Woven hanging basket lights and wooden tables are indigenous to the paddy field huts.

Intricate Designs

  • Guest bathrooms pay homage to the thousand-year-old Camplung Tanduk temple. The golden basin allows guests to perform their own purification/cleansing ritual.

  • The intricate wall tile and ceiling mosaic are inspired by the floral motifs common in Balinese fabric prints.

Balinese Inspiration

  • The hotel’s layout uses the same proportions as a traditional Balinese pavilions.
  • The stone and wood carvings in the hotel use traditional elements from Balinese culture while mixing in a few modern twists. Patterns in the hotel are extracted from traditional Balinese textiles.
