As Bali prepares to observe Nyepi, the Balinese New Year in the Saka calendar, the island will enter 24 hours of complete stillness. No flights land or depart, roads fall quiet, lights are dimmed, and daily activity pauses. Rooted in centuries-old Hindu tradition, Nyepi is a day dedicated to reflection, introspection and spiritual renewal — a rare and powerful collective moment of silence.
The evening before Nyepi, known as Pengerupukan Day, carries a vibrant and symbolic energy. Across the island, communities gather to parade Ogoh-Ogoh — large, handcrafted effigies that represent negative forces and disruptive elements in life. Accompanied by music and ceremony, these striking figures are carried through the streets. At COMO Uma Canggu, team members will honour this important tradition with a dedicated Ogoh-Ogoh parade within the property grounds, offering guests an intimate glimpse into this meaningful Balinese ritual.
On March 19 th 2026, as Nyepi begins, COMO Uma Canggu invites guests to experience the sacred day through a thoughtfully curated retreat centred on mindful movement and breath. Set against the calming backdrop of Canggu’s coastline, the programme is designed to honour the spirit of stillness while gently guiding guests through reflection and renewal.
All sessions are led by Ketut Ariani, a Bali-based yoga teacher specialising in Hatha and Vinyasa. Rooted in her personal Ashtanga Vinyasa practice, Ariani teaches with calm attentiveness and inclusivity, creating space for both adults and children to move with awareness, breathe with intention and experience steadiness within.

Henry Scott, General Manager of COMO Uma Canggu, shares: “Nyepi is one of Bali’s most meaningful traditions. It is a day that invites us to pause — not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. By acknowledging the vibrant energy of Pengerupukan and the symbolism of the Ogoh-Ogoh, before embracing the stillness of Nyepi itself, we hope to offer guests a deeper understanding of the island’s cultural and spiritual rhythms.”
Beyond the scheduled sessions, guests are encouraged to embrace the rare stillness that envelops the island — a night without traffic, without artificial light, and often illuminated only by stars. From the symbolic release of negativity on Pengerupukan to the profound quiet of Nyepi, this transition reflects the balance between movement and stillness that defines Balinese philosophy.
Nyepi at COMO Uma Canggu is not simply a retreat; it is an invitation to align with the rhythm of the island, to honour its traditions, and to welcome the New Year with clarity, respect and intention.
