Famous for its black sand and challenging surf break, Keramas has long been a favourite among dedicated surfers and locals. Yet just a little further along the coast lies Saba Beach, a lesser-known destination that offers a more peaceful and authentic seaside atmosphere.
Saba Beach remains something of a hidden gem, visited mostly by local residents and domestic travellers. Its beauty lies not only in its black sand shoreline, but also in its unpolished, natural surroundings that feel far removed from Bali’s busier tourism hubs.

One of the most distinctive things about Saba Beach is its landscape. Rather than being framed by steep cliffs, the beach opens out to green grazing land where farmers bring their cattle to roam freely during the day. It is not unusual to spot cows resting near the shore.
The atmosphere at Saba Beach feels calm. The sound of the waves, the dark volcanic sand, and the relative quiet make it an ideal place to take a pause from busy life. Those who arrive early in the morning may also enjoy one of the beach’s most beautiful sights: the sunrise.

One of the reasons Saba Beach has remained under the radar is its limited accessibility. Road access is still not ideal, and parking for cars is minimal, although motorcycles can reach the area more easily. This has naturally limited the number of visitors compared to more developed beaches in Bali.
Local leaders are now working together to improve infrastructure and support the beach’s potential as part of a wider tourism village development programme. Chairman of Kertha Sabha Banjar Saba, I Gusti Lanang Agung Ari Putra, explained that the current access route still passes through private land, which makes it unsuitable for public use. A new access road is considered essential to support future tourism development that is being prepared in cooperation with the village government and community leaders.
Meanwhile, the Head of Saba Traditional Village, I Gusti Ngurah Mahendradinata, acknowledged that acquiring land for a public access road is not easy, but expressed confidence that a solution can be found. Proposals have also been submitted to the local office of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, with hopes that a policy will eventually support the opening of a proper route to the beach.

For now, tourists can still visit Saba Beach freely, but there are a few things worth noting before going. Swimming is not recommended, as the beach has a strong rip current and waves that can become particularly rough during high tide. Visitors should also bring cash, since many of the small stalls, eateries, and coffee vendors in the village do not accept card payments.
Despite its limitations, Saba Beach continues to attract both local residents and travellers looking for a quieter coastal experience. Its understated beauty, natural atmosphere, and local charm make it a worthy addition to Gianyar’s list of beach destinations.
Another advantage of visiting Saba Beach is its location. From here, travellers can easily continue their journey to other well-known destinations in Gianyar and beyond. Batubulan, known for its artistic heritage, is within easy reach, while Ubud’s cultural attractions are also accessible for those wanting to combine beach time with sightseeing.
This makes Saba Beach an appealing stop for travellers who want more than just a day by the sea. It offers a chance to experience Bali’s coastline while staying connected to the island’s artistic and cultural heart.

Although Saba Beach does not yet have the same level of infrastructure or popularity as some of Bali’s better-known coastal destinations, it continues to attract visitors looking for a quieter beach experience.
