Mercure Surabaya Manyar, a hotel under the Accor Group, launched its first Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on December 5, 2023.
This year, Mercure Surabaya Manyar introduces a unique Christmas tree that combines innovation and sustainability, made from a 3-meter tall Water Hyacinth.
"We call it a Sustainable Masterpiece. This Christmas tree is evidence of our commitment to environmental awareness while creating an unforgettable holiday experience for our guests," explained Eksi A., Cluster General Manager of Mövenpick Hotel Surabaya City, Mercure Surabaya Manyar, and ibis Surabaya Tidar.
Mercure Surabaya Manyar collaborated with Witrove SMEs to realize the 3-meter tall Water Hyacinth Christmas Tree.
"This was a challenge for us as it was the first time we transformed water hyacinth into such a large Christmas tree," said Wiwit, the owner of Witrove SMEs located at Jl. Kebraon Indah Permai No.45, Surabaya.
Wiwit also explained that Water Hyacinth is often considered a weed that can damage aquatic environments.
"Therefore, I was very excited when Mercure Surabaya Manyar invited us to collaborate in turning Water Hyacinth into a Christmas Tree. It is no longer a weed but a work of art," he further explained.
Mercure Surabaya Manyar utilized the Christmas Tree Lighting moment to share love and care by inviting the orphans from Kasih Agape Orphanage. They were also allowed to practice firsthand how to transform water hyacinth into a pencil box for daily use.
"We are very happy to be here celebrating Christmas," said Maria, a 15-year-old from Kasih Agape Orphanage.
