Discovering a Different Side of Yogyakarta: Where Travel Becomes an Opportunity to Grow
There is a certain pleasure in getting to know a destination beyond the places listed on an itinerary. It can be found in the story behind an old neighbourhood, in meeting the people who keep a tradition alive, or simply in taking the time to notice how a landscape shapes everyday life.
At Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta, this way of travelling takes guests closer to the character of Yogyakarta itself. The experience moves between culture, nature, food, wellbeing, and the people who make the destination what it is.
A good place to begin is Kotagede, one of Yogyakarta’s historic areas and the former capital of the Mataram Kingdom. Through the Kotagede Heritage Trail, guests can walk through its neighbourhoods with a local storyteller, visit silver artisans and traditional markets, and see how history continues to exist alongside everyday life.

The connection with the local community continues beyond the city. At a nearby mushroom cultivation site, guests can see how local farmers grow and harvest button, oyster, and shimeji mushrooms. Elsewhere, Javanese herb-making and eco-pounding offer a more hands-on introduction to traditional knowledge, through experiences shared by local women and small businesses in Sleman.
Even food can offer another way of understanding a place. At Refresh All-day Dining, breakfast overlooking Sungai Denggung comes with a closer look at where ingredients come from. Since 2025, Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta has used 100% cage-free eggs sourced from three local women farming groups, connecting what arrives on the table with responsible sourcing and local livelihoods.
For those looking inward, the Riverside Deck offers a different pace. Yoga, meditation, and sound healing take place alongside the river and surrounding greenery, allowing nature to become part of the experience rather than simply a backdrop.

Perhaps this is what makes travel meaningful: the opportunity to discover something beyond the destination itself. A new perspective, a conversation, a tradition, or simply a little more time to reconnect with oneself.
This idea forms the foundation of GROW, Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta’s approach to travel through two journeys: GROW WITHIN, centred on wellbeing, reflection and time for oneself, and GROW WITH THE PLACE, an invitation to discover Yogyakarta through its people, traditions and local life.
Two ways of travelling, connected by one simple idea: to travel is to discover, and through discovery, there is always room to grow.
