Gajah Gallery is delighted to announce As If, a solo exhibition by OGGZGOY, widely known as OGGZ. Opening on 30 November 2024 in our Yogyakarta space, this exhibition presents OGGZ’s latest body of work, where his distinctive street art practice converges with the formalities of institutional art spaces to interrogate themes of perception, identity, and value in contemporary art.
OGGZ’s art is a familiar sight in Yogyakarta’s urban landscape. His iconic half-body figures—distinguished by oversized torsos, minimalist circular eyes, and spindly legs—adorn abandoned walls, fences, and rooftops, claiming these spaces as canvases for his creativity. In As If, these familiar figures are reimagined within ornate, Old Master-style frames. By juxtaposing street art’s raw, spontaneous energy with the refined conventions of a gallery, OGGZ invites viewers to question how context influences the value and status of art.
Does a piece of art become more “valuable” within the structured confines of a gallery? Does a traditional frame elevate its cultural significance? Rather than providing didactic answers, OGGZ playfully dismantles these hierarchies, ensuring that the conversation remains approachable and engaging.
Beyond recontextualising his street art, As If delves into OGGZ’s playful appropriation of popular media. Drawing inspiration from sports articles, music reviews, and other forms of mass communication, he inserts himself into these narratives by altering headlines, imagery, and, occasionally, the content itself. In Sundul Donk (2024), for instance, he reimagines a sports article, replacing professional athletes with his anthropomorphic figures, subtly mocking the media’s fixation on heroic achievements.
These works transcend parody, probing deeper into themes of ego, identity, and representation in an era dominated by hyperreality and digital culture. By positioning himself as the protagonist in these reimagined narratives, OGGZ critiques society’s obsession with personal acclaim while challenging the ways cultural narratives are constructed and consumed.
The exhibition bridges the divide between street art’s rebellious essence and the curated environment of a gallery. OGGZ’s transparent creative process—showcasing both prototypes and final works—invites audiences to engage intimately with his artistic journey, blurring the boundaries between “high” and “popular” art.
As If positions OGGZ not only as an artist but also as a storyteller, offering a satirical yet incisive critique of the art world’s structures. By challenging traditional hierarchies, the exhibition emphasises that art is a universal language, accessible to all, rather than a privilege granted by a select few.
Join us on 30 November 2024, from 18:00–21:00 WIB, for the official opening of As If at Gajah Gallery Yogyakarta. The exhibition will be on view until 30 December 2024.
