Are you planning a sunrise trip to Mount Bromo, East Java? Catching the sunrise at Mount Bromo is undeniably one of the world’s most magical experiences. It is after all dubbed “The Golden Sunrise of Bromo” - even if that means trekking for a few kilometres in the cold uphill weather at 3 AM.
Tour guides normally determine a sunrise spot in their packages. But, it’s always good to gain a few insights into the available options. Bromo’s sunrise is nonetheless enchanting at whichever spot you choose to settle in. Let’s get on to the list of the best Bromo sunrise spots from the highest to the lowest altitudes.
Best Bromo Sunrise Spots
Penanjakan 1
Perched 2,770 metres above sea level, Penanjakan Point (Penanjakan 1) is the highest point to witness the sunrise on Mount Bromo. Penanjakan 1 is a favourite amongst sunrise hunters due to its vast and interesting view amongst the other spots. You can reach Penanjakan 1 from the entrance of Wonokitri, Pasuruan Regency. Bear in mind that the wind can get stronger here than anywhere else.
Kingkong Hill
Below Penanjakan 1 and above Penanjakan 2 is a hill inspired by the gallant fictional monster, Kingkong. This hill got its name from the shape of the cliff side with a prominent area in the form of rocks and recesses and resembles the head and nose of Kingkong. Over the years, many visitors have opted Kingkong Hill to catch the sunrise since a direct view of Mount Arjuna and the city of Malang from the other side can be seen on a clear day. Getting there is perfect for challenge-seekers because they’ll have to face a quiet and uphill terrain.
Bukit Cinta
Next is Bukit Cinta (Love Hill), also known as Penanjakan 3. Its 2,680-metre-altitude doesn’t offer much significance from Penanjakan 1 and Seruni Point, however, you can observe the grace of the Tengger Caldera and the dashing Mahameru Peak. The Tengger Tribe residing in the area believe that this was the location of where their ancestors, Roro Anteng and Joko Seger, met for the first time. Thus, it’s called Bukit Cinta.
Seruni Point
You can see a glimpse of a temple in the background of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park area from 2,400 metres above sea level. You can witness several more from Seruni Point, such as the vast stretch of the Bromo sand, Mount Batok, Mount Bromo’s crater, and Mahameru Peak (a common name for Mount Semeru’s peak). Unlike Penanjakan 1, Seruni Point is included in the area of Sukapura District, Probolinggo Regency.
Dingklik Post
This is smaller in comparison to the other Bromo sunrise spots, as well as nearer to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park gate. Despite its size, its panorama is no less enchanting - you can directly face Mount Batok. Dingklik Post is included in the area of Wonokitri Village, Tosari District, Pasuruan Regency with an altitude of 2,463 meters above sea level.
Mentigen Hill
You can walk or hop on a motorcycle taxi to the top of Mentigan Hill without experiencing the Jeep voyage that Bromo is famed for these days. This hill happens to be outside of the Penanjakan area, scaling 2,300 metres above sea level. You can access the Mentigen Hill sunrise spot through Cemoro Lawang, Ngadisari Village, Sukapura District, Probolinggo Regency.
