The problems of the COVID-19 pandemic have given a major impact on human life throughout the world. Therefore, it takes great confidence in facing the new order of life. One of the efforts to foster a sense of optimism in facing various challenges ahead is to appreciate the works of art. Because, it is one way to improve and develop human abilities in caring for others, and caring for the universe.
Four Points by Sheraton Surabaya, Pakuwon Indah collaborates with Teh Villa Gallery presenting an ‘Art Exhibition’ by Made Gunawan, an artist from Bali. Through this painting exhibition, guests and the public in Surabaya can visit Four Points by Sheraton Surabaya, Pakuwon Indah to see a series of painting collections with the theme ‘Living in Harmony’. “This pandemic condition makes art fans have limited access to directly visit art performances and exhibitions, therefore, we aim to introduce and to enjoy art from Bali, that represents the most unique and distinctive culture in Indonesia,” explained Ronald Sitolang, Owner of Teh Villa Gallery.
Alamsyah Jo, as Complex General Manager of The Westin Surabaya and Four Points by Sheraton Surabaya, Pakuwon Indah said, “Four Points Pakuwon is actually a hotel that is close to art, every corner is full of art installations and decorations. You could say this is an art museum within the hotel. For the first time, we held a painting exhibition with Teh Villa Gallery, bringing a maestro from Bali, Made Gunawan, to Surabaya. Thus, making it easier for painting enthusiasts in Surabaya for easier access, and of course it’s safe yet comfortable while we are still implementing health protocols according to the government’s strict standards.”
A glimpse of I Made Gunawan, he is an artist from Bali who grew up with the tradition of “harmony” of Balinese society. As we know, the Balinese tradition of glorifying the harmony between Bhuana Agung (the universe) and Bhuana Alit (small nature; humans, animals, and plants) seems to reprint their inner record in responding to the idealization of life interactions between humans. Holding tightly to these concepts and traditions, Made Gunawan expresses his idealism in his works. It can be seen from the objects in his painting collection which are dominated by stylized natural objects, trees, animals, and humans. Not only the object, but the painting technique demonstrated by Made Gunawan is also full of harmonious narratives, such as the background color of his painting which consists of layers of color mixing, overlapping of brush strokes, melting to splashes of acrylic paint.
“We invite the people of Surabaya who are around Four Points Pakuwon, such as those who are walking in Pakuwon Mall, or want to eat at Djaman Doeloe Resto & Bar, our restaurant, to come and see first hand Made Gunawan’s works. His paintings have been displayed in the hotel lobby area and Djaman Doeloe Resto & Bar on the M3 floor. Please come immediately, because the access is free of charge,” concluded Alamasyah Jo.
The “Art Exhibition” Living in Harmony by Made Gunawan takes place from February 25 – April 25, 2022. For more information, please contact (031) 99150000 or Instagram @fourpointssurabayapakuwon.
