Whiz Luxe Hotel Spazio Surabaya celebrated National Batik Day 2024 on October 2 with a series of exciting events, including a batik-making workshop and a fashion show featuring models with disabilities. Collaborating with Aora Wistara Dharma, a Surabaya-based batik community, the hotel hosted a batik demonstration in its 16th-floor lobby, where guests had the opportunity to learn the traditional art of "mencanting" or making batik patterns. The hands-on activity was well-received, drawing enthusiastic participation from hotel guests throughout the day.

The highlight of the celebration was a fashion show that featured two models trained by Aora Wistara Dharma. Rendi, who has autism, and Ulin, who is both hearing and speech-impaired, captivated the audience with their professionalism and grace as they showcased batik garments. The crowd was particularly moved by their performance, reflecting the impact of the skills training provided by the organization. “We provide training tailored to the talents and interests of children with special needs, including classes in modeling, sewing, and art, to prepare them for future employment,” said Yosie, the owner of Aora Wistara Dharma.
The event continued with a photography competition, where ten Surabaya-based photographers captured images of the models in batik. The photos were shared on social media, and the best three will be selected for special prizes from Whiz Luxe Hotel Spazio Surabaya. The competition provided an additional creative outlet for participants while promoting the beauty of batik.
Camelia Ayu Rahmawati, Marketing Communications Manager of Whiz Luxe Hotel Spazio Surabaya, emphasized the hotel’s commitment to celebrating Indonesia’s cultural heritage. "We aim to offer more than just room packages, meals, and events. By engaging guests in activities like batik-making, we hope to instill a sense of pride in our nation’s rich cultural legacy, especially in batik," Rahmawati stated.
The event also featured representatives from DPW Mantra Jawa Timur, a community focused on preserving indigenous culture, who provided educational insights into the contemporary relevance of batik. With the participation of hotel guests, photographers, and cultural enthusiasts, the celebration was a resounding success in promoting and honoring Indonesia’s traditional art form.
