Here's How MORAZEN Hotel Surabaya Celebrates Earth Hour by Introducing Traditional Toys to Generation Alpha

Under the theme "Disconnect to Reconnect," the hotel located on Kayoon Street collaborates with Kampoeng Dolanan, a community dedicated to preserving traditional culture, transforming the luxurious lobby with its predominant modern interior into a children's play area. Various types of traditional games are available, including engklek, marbles, spinning tops, hopscotch, jump rope, stilts, hula hoops, bamboo spinning tops, and shadow puppet tents.

Litania U., the Marketing Communications and Public Relations representative of MORAZEN Surabaya, explains that in welcoming this year's Earth Hour, MORAZEN Hotel Surabaya aims not only to emphasize the importance of environmental conservation but also to reintroduce possibly forgotten traditional values. "We also contribute by turning off unnecessary lights and electronic devices from 8:30 to 9:30 PM in the lobby and outdoor areas of the hotel, and in this atmosphere, we invite at least 25 children aged 3 to 11 to participate in the 'Disconnect to Reconnect' event to experience the ambiance of the past and the activities undertaken during power outages."

"Tonight's activities are also open to the public, so it's not just hotel guests who are here, but also some guests from outside the hotel who previously learned about the event through social media," she adds.

General Manager of MORAZEN Surabaya, Fajar B., also adds that Earth Hour is more than just a ceremonial lighting of candles with the symbol 60+, there is a profound meaning and message that needs to be conveyed to future generations about the awareness of the climate crisis, which starts with each of us.

Mustofa, commonly known as Cak Mus, one of the founders of the Kampoeng Dolanan community, explains, "In traditional games, there are two generations involved. Children are involved in the game, and parents are involved in understanding the philosophy of the game, so that parents know that the games their children are playing have moral messages that are close to our culture, Indonesian culture. So, the hope is that when they get home, parents can interpret the message from the game and build a foundation for communication within the family," says Cak Mus.

The event, involving both parents and children, received positive responses, one of which came from Rahmawati, a follower on Kampoeng Dolanan's Instagram account. "When I found out that Kampoeng Dolanan would be at MORAZEN Hotel, I was curious about what the event would be like, especially since it was an evening event. It turns out to be really cool because the hotel also provided acoustic music and a violin playing children's songs. I could have quality time and play with my 7-year-old daughter," says Rahmawati.

Litania adds that they will continue to support activities related to environmental and cultural preservation. "We believe that by introducing traditional toys to Generation Alpha, we can help them understand that happiness and enjoyment can be found in simple things and are not dependent on technology," she concludes.
