‘The Beauty of China’ Embark the Chinese New Year Revelry
The iconic show returned after a three-year hiatus during the pandemic. Alamsyah J., Complex General Manager of The Westin Surabaya and Four Points Pakuwon Indah, who is also the initiator of ‘The Beauty of China’, explains, “This is our seventeenth edition, and we are glad to be able to deliver the long-awaited ‘The Beauty of China’ show. Not only us as the creator and the talents who missed having the show, but also our repeater guests. As a result, we have all of our tables sold out tonight with at least 1,000 pax joining the night.”
This Year of Wood Dragon, ‘The Beauty of China’ brought 250 dancers from the best 7 groups in Surabaya, which are Thomas Dance Sports Entertainment, Dimar Dance Theatre, Belle Ballet, Trivi Dance Sport, Last Minute Street Crew, Heavy Buck Stylez, and MC Models Management. Jalu P. W., the Event Manager explains, “We have gathered hundreds of talented dancers in an hour show, to perform in several segments. This is very exciting, since many of these talents have been participating in The Beauty of China since years ago. Some of the dancers even danced since they were younger.”
Sella Z., the Complex Marketing and Communications Manager, also stated, “What is unique in combining these dancers in one show is each of them has different colors and genres, and they all have to correlate their dance in Chinese or Oriental style. Tonight, we saw the segment of ‘Old Shanghai’ was danced by Trivi Dance Sport who were actually Latin dancers, and then they had to mix their choreography style into Chinese. We also witnessed how Dimar Dance Theater offered theatrical dance performances in the Traditional Chinese Kingdom and Wonderful Indonesia segments. These kinds of combinations were exclusively made for ‘The Beauty of China’.”
The performers were not only the dancers. There were interactive LED and lighting shows, which complemented the overall story of the show. Sella explains, “We also collaborated with the brilliant trio — Nuansa Concept, D’Factory, and Lasika for the visual parade. Using modern technology like 3D art, the show really felt like it came to life. Each of the segments felt real like we were really in different worlds.”
Two Chinese singers, Amelia L. and Zhang C., also serenaded the best Chinese sing-along songs throughout the night, accompanied by the Seraphim Orchestra and Stradivari Orchestra. Meanwhile, the magical make-up was supported by Eddy R.'s team, and the costumes were tailored by Bie H. T. and Tarita Stylish. “All the costumes from us were fully tailored for ‘The Beauty of China’. We were inspired by dragons and applied their elements to the attires. To make it more unique and matched to our ideas, we had to import some of the fabrics all the way from China,” Tita T., the owner of Tarita Stylish explained.
The show was also organized by Fairytale Event Organizer and well-documented by Prime Cinema. Alamsyah J. stated, “We are very grateful for this long-term partnership between The Westin Surabaya and all of these amazing talents and supportive vendors. This show happened from time to time because of each of us. We do hope that we can continue bringing ‘The Beauty of China’ shows in the upcoming Chinese New Year to entertain families and friends, not only in Surabaya but also in Indonesia.”
