Located in the easternmost part of Java, the Osing tribe calls Banyuwangi their home, a regency in East Java, Indonesia. Approximately 250 kilometers from Surabaya, the provincial capital of East Java, Banyuwangi offers a unique cultural landscape where the Osing people have preserved their traditions for centuries. While Surabaya serves as a bustling urban center, Banyuwangi is a more tranquil and rural region, known for its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.

The Osing tribe’s spirituality is a blend of Hindu-Buddhist, Islamic, and animistic beliefs. While many Osing people identify as Muslims, traditional rituals honoring ancestors and nature remain integral to their lives. Ceremonies like offering food to spirits and praying for blessings reflect their deep respect for both the spiritual and natural worlds.

What makes the Osing tribe particularly unique is their language, Basa Osing. This language is distinct from standard Javanese, blending elements of old Javanese with local dialects. For the Osing people, their language is more than just a tool for communication—it is a symbol of identity and pride. Efforts are continuously made by the community to preserve and teach Basa Osing to the younger generations, ensuring the survival of their cultural heritage.


Barong Ider Bumi

The Barong Ider Bumi is a purification ritual performed to cleanse the village of negative energies and protect its inhabitants from misfortune. Held on the second day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, the ceremony involves parading a Barong, a mythical lion-like figure through the village. Accompanied by traditional music and offerings, the procession serves as a prayer for blessings, peace, and prosperity for the community.


Gedhogan

One of the most iconic traditions of the Osing tribe is Gedhogan, a communal activity where villagers pound rice grains using wooden mortars and pestles. More than a practical task, Gedhogan is a rhythmic celebration that unites the community in gratitude for a bountiful harvest. The synchronized sounds of the pounding tools create a harmonious melody, often accompanied by traditional songs.


Mepe Kasur

Mepe Kasur, or "sun-drying the mattresses," is a unique tradition that symbolizes cleansing and renewal. During this ritual, Osing families take their mattresses outside to dry under the sun, often accompanied by traditional songs and festivities. It is believed that this practice drives away bad energy, ensuring a fresh start for the household.


Pencak Sumping

The Osing tribe has its own traditional martial art known as Pencak Sumping. Unlike other forms of pencak silat, Pencak Sumping incorporates graceful movements inspired by traditional dances, blending art and self-defense. This martial art is not only a means of physical training but also a way to preserve the tribe’s cultural identity. Performances of Pencak Sumping are often featured in ceremonies and cultural festivals.


Seblang Ritual

The Seblang is a sacred dance ritual performed by a chosen female dancer believed to be in a trance. This unique ceremony is meant to cleanse the village of bad energy and bring blessings to the community. Accompanied by traditional music, the dancer performs hypnotic movements in a ceremonial setting, creating an atmosphere of mysticism and reverence.


Tumpeng Sewu

Tumpeng Sewu, meaning "A Thousand Tumpengs," is a grand communal feast where cone-shaped rice dishes (tumpeng) are prepared and shared. This tradition serves as an expression of gratitude to the divine for blessings received throughout the year. Villagers gather to share these meals in harmony, reinforcing bonds within the community.
