Spirit of Art is all about storytelling. It’s a glance into the secret lives of drink makers and a dive into the interlaced worlds of tattoo and mixology: a blend of creations, stories, passions and personalities. Spirit of Art began five years ago, when it first delved into the alchemy of London’s bartending scene. After this UK showcase, Spirit of Art – Tattooed Bartenders in Asia launched in 2018, which covered the rich cocktail cultures of Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. Giffard’s liqueurs and syrups meet the top-shelf demands of the world’s leading bartenders and baristas. They act as the binding ingredient between concoctions in the glass and connections across the bar.
In 2019 and early 2020 we started our second edition with tattooed bartenders and baristas from Bali, Jakarta, Manila and Ho Chi Minh City with 55 profiles participated in our project. After a successful launch on social media, we are ready to present to you our second edition book of Spirit Of Art by Giffard – Tattooed Bartenders & Baristas.
TATTOO & BARTENDING: A NATURAL BLEND
The perfect drink is born when bartenders and baristas pour their hearts, personalities, and expertise into the creation. So it’s no surprise they find a similar mode of self-expression in tattoos. Both ingredients and ink tell us where they’ve been, what they like, and who they are – cementing the relationship between these two subcultures.
GIFFARD: THE EMBODIMENT OF ARTISTIC MIXOLOGY

DIFFERENT FORMS OF ART
Culture and history owe a lot of things to arts. Arts doesn’t need to only be limited to brushes and pens. Since way back, we humans have been using our own bodies as a “living canvas” to express our personal belief and meaning.
With the new technology, art can now be in different forms and shapes. With help and ideas from our design agency we wanted to focus on the hand features of the bartenders and baristas, since hands are important body part for creating drinks. On the photos of the bartenders and baristas you can see the different shapes of their hands in action while pouring and mixing a drink. The illustrator made one unique design for each profile in the book. Therefore, we chose to have it as the main art creation for the cover
PASSION TO PAGE: THE RELEASE OF SPIRIT OF ART
Delivering on the “art” piece of this execution, four talented photographers captured vivid visuals of each location: Eddy Mulyawan (Bali), Tariq Widarso (Jakarta), Sonny Thakur (Manila), and Nghia Ngo (Ho Chi Minh City). Every drink and tattoo is as unique as the bartenders and baristas behind them.
Giffard’s Spirit of Art is an intimate look at the journey of ingredients becoming drinks, and tattoo
This limited edition book will be available from February 2021.
