JW Marriott Surabaya has announced the appointment of Stephan Winkler as its General Manager.

A German national, born in 1962, Stephan studied languages before entering the Hotel Business.

Now an industry veteran for more than 35 years, he started his hotel career in 1982 at Munich’s landmark hotel, the “Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski”. In young years he left Germany for the first time in 1985 to join the famous “Hotel Ritz” in Paris. After Germany’s reunification, he was appointed Director of Sales & Marketing at the “Bristol Hotel Kempinski” in Berlin in 1990. In December 1994 he moved to Asia for the first time as Director of Rooms for 5-star Hotels in Hong Kong and Jakarta. Stephan joined Starwood Hotels & Resorts in July 2001, as Deputy General Manager of “Sheraton Heliopolis Hotel, Towers & Casino” Cairo/Egypt, a post he held for 3 years.

His first General Manager position was lined up for him in 2003 in Indonesia, at Lombok’s first 5-star hotel, the “Sheraton Senggigi Beach Resort”. Then the call came to open the new 5-star “Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa”, outside of Bangkok. Having become an opening specialist he ventured to India for the Westin brand, successfully opening “The Westin Pune Koregaon Park” in 2009. His next destination was “The Westin Macau Resort” in January 2011. Stephan moved to Bali in May 2013 to put the newly opened 74-suites “Anantara Uluwatu Bali” Resort on the path of success, followed by the pre-opening preparations for the “Westin Ubud Resort & Spa”.

Having just arrived in Surabaya, Stephan said: “I could not imagine a more exciting challenge. JW Marriott Surabaya feels like home already and I look forward to continuing the legacy of this landmark hotel with my great Team”.

Apart from the hotel little time is left for his other interest: literature, arts, and golf. Stephan Winkler speaks several languages including French, Arabic and Bahasa Indonesia. He is married with two sons.
